"Technically" I believe you're misinformed?
If you check old documents, books, manuscripts etc you'll find the word used to describe flintlock and caplock handguns is "pistol" (e.g. duelling pistols.)
According to my Funk and Wagnall's Standard Dictionary circa 1973 a pistol is "A small firearm having a stock to fit the hand, and a short barrel: now either a revolver or automatic type fired from one hand."
In the introduction of the "NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting" (First Edition May 2009) we have "...Many different types of pistols exist, including revolvers, semi-automatics, muzzleloaders, hinge actions, bolt actions and air pistols..."
Agreed there is a tendency these days to distinguish an auto-loader from a revolver by using the term pistol, however that does not change the true definition of "pistol" which includes all handguns...
OBTW regarding the OP, my favorite pistol depends on what I'm using it for. I'm partial to 1911's in .45acp, but my favorite plinker has to be a Ruger Bearcat .22lr single action revolver.
