Know everyone's probably knee deep in their spring gardening (got squash, peppers and cukes producing) but with the way the economy's heading was wondering if anyone has starting planning for fall? (pay it forward mindset) Want to get to the point having something in the ground year round.

Seed planing? When to start planting for the fall?

Lucky enough to live in zone 8, so I've got a long growing season.

Never big on the fall garden stuff. Kinda of played out after spring. But considering things, why the heck not!

Good growing season here in Louisiana, just gotta deal with the heat and work the beds over. Currently have 5 ea 4 x 20 raised beds, planning on putting in 2 more raised beds for next year, may do for the fall.

10-15Y Onions - the 10-15 is when the seeds are supposed to be planted, October 15. The Y stands for Yellow, for a yellow onion.

Garlic - easy to grow crop, cold tolerate, plant in early fall - mid winter. I have heard that garlic should be planted anywhere from November - end of December.

Greens - turnips, mustards, rutabaga,,,,. The rutabaga is maybe the largest. I have seem some rutabaga plants get pretty big.

Yep, when I plan my spring garden, I ALSO start planning my fall garden. Peas, spinach, lettuce, chard, and root crops...beets, carrots, garlic, onions, parsnips, turnips. The root crops I usually do a fall planting and then leave in the ground to overwinter, and/or just pull up as I need them. Anything that I don't pull up earlier, I can pull up and harvest in spring. If I want to save seed, from that planting, then I just leave it to blossom and set seed the following spring (as my turnips are doing now.)

Kev,

Thanks - this is the kind of info I was seeking. What and when to plant being the main concern. I've start roots crop early in the season (Jan - Feb) that did ok.

Know most root crops can be planted late in the season just did know when to start them. Also read where a 2nd season of tomatoes can be planted if done at the right time

Again just trying to keep someting in the ground year round
