EATING CANNED FOOD in EMERGENCY sit- WITHOUT PRECOOKING?

IS IT SAFE TO CONSUME FOOD STRAIGHT OUT OF A CAN WITHOUT PRE-[/I]COOKING IT???...?

I got to thinking about the Oklahoma tornado. Well, actually ANY scenario where I may find myself in the basement- sheltering in place- and getting hungry.
Does ANYONE know for a FACT- (to avoid serious illness) if its OK to eat my canned preps? Like , Campbells soup (meat in it) or others containing meat, canned clams (seafood) etc.canned chili, etc..
IF NOT, would it be a bad idea to use some of my "light up" firestarter (the lava rock pellets one which lites on Anything) and be safe to inhale it while cooking my food - only b/c remember, I would have the basement windows, doors sealed off (nuke, hurricane, tornado, dirty bomb, etc scenario) until the govt says its safe to come out.

Has ANYONE EVER CONSUMED Uncooked canned food and NOT been sick?
(there may be kids /elderly involved) so plz consider before posting advice.

Most canned foods are already cooked and only require heating they should be fine if eaten from the can without heating.

cooking canned food safely in my basement?? while sheltering in place

If I need to take cover and stay in my basement for an unspecified amt of time- (as in disaster, etc) would it be safe to consume canned food "right out of the can..?" - or - if it NEEDS to be pre-cooked - then, would you advise that I can say use my (BOB) tripod with tealight type mini camp stove -
or - even perhaps my "FIRED UP" lava rock pellets - to cook the food in my sealed off basement.? I am REALLY worried that, in an effort to be safe- that we will get sick from fumes /gases.

HAS ANYONE EVER CONSUMED (SAFELY) Uncooked canned food items and NOT GOTTEN SICK?

thnx for reply!

IIRC most everything that is canned is either preserved or cooked. That being said, I haven't gotten acutely sick from eating any from a can. But those damned C-Rats used to give me the worse case of gas.

I eat canned fruits and various meats (chicken, tuna, sardines) all the time without reheating and no ill effects.

My DH has been known to eat canned corn straight from the can without heating. He loves it that way and does not get sick.

I would not worry about reheating commercially canned foods in an emergency.

I looked in my pantry and could not find one item that required cooking. If a packaged food item required cooking it would say so on the package.

Canned foods are cooked in the can and thus sterile. That's what the canning process is. There is nothing in there to make you sick unless the seal is somehow compromised, in which case the food is spoiling. This is rare and if you follow standard procedure of not eating anything from cans that are bulging, pressurized, or stinky, you'll be OK.

I have always eaten foods cold from the can. Home canned foods I tend to want to simmer first, but commercially canned foods I don't worry so much about.

All - repeat all -commercially canned foods are cooked at a high temperature right in the can. They are ALL safe to eat with no preparation, or else they would require refrigeration before opening.

There is no possible way you can get sick from eating unheated canned food (with the normal proviso that the can is not bulging, leaking, rusted through, etc).

And yes, millions of people have eaten canned food without heating it first, and without any ill effects.

Relax.

When I'm at out of town gun shows that don't provide food (common), I usually eat ravioli out of the can for my lunch. It's quick and handy.

It should not pose a problem to eat out of the can for most foods. Most are pre-cooked anyways

Eating tinned food cold is fine - except for some of those canned stews......... Just looking at the congealed fat on the top of the can when you open it is enough for me.

But tinned veggies, fruit, chicken or tuna - no problem. Some of the tinned meats we get here in SA taste BETTER when cold!

The reason why we bought soups and ravioli and stuff like that is to eat it straight out of the can with plastic forks or spoons.
When food gets canned it goes through a procedure that makes everything hot and sterile. My older British friends that went through the War still eat their baked beans that way, with a little toast.

It's comforting for us to know that they ARE safe. In fact, I sometimes prefer the chef boy ar dee stuff for lunches like that. Plastic fork, can, walking in the park. Some find it 'gross' but I am not the only one at work that does this.

If you're still skeptical, you can always look into buying these:

There are a lot of who have eaten much worse than cold commercially canned grub.

Personally, the chef boyardee products are the easiest to get down of the 'meals in a can' and are a part of my short term plan. The bonus? The wife and kids don't like them, and leave them alone ensuring then to be there when needed.

Yes I know, store what you eat, but sometimes storing what won't disappear is just as important.

People looked at me funny when I would pull a can of ravioli, a can of peaches and a can of coke out of the bottom of my pack when out for a week or longer, but that water weight was better than gold that last night after a week of camping food.

I want to amend my previous post just a little -- there are very few canned foods that require refrigeration, and these would require the correct storage temperature and possibly serving temperature.

However these are far and few between. I would also use the storage in the store as a clue to determine what is safe.

Examples of these that I have seen are some types of whole 5 lb. hams and canned crab products.

Also, I would be more concerned about cooking indoors without ventilation than eating shelf-stable foods from a can (or pouch or whatever).

I agree with the responses. Canned food is almost always fully cooked unless it says otherwise. Canned items I keep on hand at all times:

Campbells Soup (variety)
Sardines
Tuna
Beans
Corn
Spam
Chicken
Ham chunks

If you goto the isle in your food store that has the spam/tuna products, you can find air tight packets of tuna and spam (among other things) that have the same shelf life as the can, but in a smaller serving. I find this to be very convenient as my wife and I can't eat an entire block of spam before it gets old (SO much sodium)!

I just said in another thread that MRE's are a nice option if you can spend anywhere from 40-120 dollars. They often come with flameless heaters and have a shelf life of 5 years.

LOL. That's why I eat ravioli cold. If you heat it up, you can taste it more, and ewww! Rather not be able to taste it as much. Between that and a heavy dose of Tabasco, I can choke it down.

Eating canned food without cooking it??????

I have been doing it all of my life, so have my wife and our kids. I never cook canned food, I much prefer it cold straight out of the can.

I think it safe to say that you have little to worry about eating canned food without cooking it.
