Id like to start going at Wallyworld up the street from me.

I have done it at the Apartment community where I work and have gotten tools, knives, a tackle box...

Best is when people leave an apartment due to non payment of rent...that usually means they cant afford a moving truck or trailer. so what ever they cant fit into their car/truck/van, they leave for me! I take what I want and sell the rest on Craigslist.

I could litteraly fully furnish a house with the stuff they leave. Funiture, appliances, silverware, dishes, linen, tools...you name it.

My property manager thinks Im nutts when I walk into her office at the first of the month wanting and hoping for there to be non paying tennants!

I am unfamiliar with this term, are we talking actually jumping into a refuse dumpster???
Yea! Climb in or reach by hand or with tools to grab good stuff people throw away. I ate a steak today I got from a Food Lion dumpster a few weeks ago. In fact I eat better from the dumpsters than what I ever buy.:)

I've found 5 blue point 4 led flashlights that didnt work because previous owner didnt reassemble them correctly. reassembled and they all worked great. found tons of tools, fittings, valves, light fixtures. Also lots of decent lumber to be had in those big home development areas (in the bins of course ;).

I guess if this is your way or preparing for TEOTWAWKI then go for it, but I cannot picture myself eating a steak from a dumpster.

I can see getting used furniture or something like that, but food… I hope you cooked that steak extra well done with a little “burntness” to it so to kill all the pathogens

I just lost my appetite yuck!

I have been doing this for over 15 years...and I started with my father when I was young. He taught me how to live and be fed in the time of need...and it sure did come in handy when I was homeless...I do this often and have come across other divers who get angry when they see me in "their" dumpster....truth is I've probably been going to those locations a lot longer than they could dream of. It's definitely out of necessity and I do NOT do it for profit like MOST people.

Yeah! They can be Territorial. Most peeps I run into are just average people trying to feed their families. Sometimes I get caught by employees. I limit my time to 3 minutes, unless theres gold in there like the 5 cases of Polish Sausage last year. I got 3 of them. Gotta leave something for the others. Besides! Cant take it all, where'd I put it? :)

I have found CD players and stereos that I fixed and gave to friends. I was an appartment complex maintenance guy outside a university. We also found lots of stuff but usually since I only lived in a small apartment I could not bring it home. My wife would kill me. She doesn't really like the idea of diving, but I have done it since I was about 12.

Also I still try to see what I can find during move in and out periods by other colleges and such. The apartment complexes have the best results. I try to see if it looks interesting from the car as I just drive around them, then if there was something interesting I would jump out. But alas I have been unsuccessful at this strategy for the last couple years. I just do it about 2-3 times a year now.

It is like a sport, or at least was in the past. I really want to get back to it, but my wife does'nt like it so I have to keep it on the DL.

for some reason I forsee this being thew new HOT thing to do. maybe even break out into an underground sport?
Its too late for that is has already happened...

On the plus side I found tonight a cast iron wood stove. When I seen that I was like I'm definitely not leaving that there....I man handled it outta the construction dumpster and into the comfort of the backseat of my car! I've always wanted one and there it was just for me! lol. One item off the checklist for the preps!

Here in Fort Lauderdale there are guys that watch the dumpsters like a hawk.
When you put bulk trash out at the beginning of the month the guys come around and take almost anything but garbage.
These people are junk specialist and pick the area clean.

I keep a close eye on the dumpster outside close to the apartment. Things wont last long if left there. find more goodies than you can ever imagine, college town and all. Sell, trade off, no food, but lots of good barter. Heck of a nice vacume last week, small table, you just never know. I have been sitting in this dumpster aquired office chair for over 3 years now. One mans trash is another mans treasure. I even got a tackle box full with a old pocket knife in the bottow. Sold for 25.00 on e-bay.....

I love them, we all so have huge lidless ones called skips. For the later you have to ask the permission of the person who rents it, but other then that its a free for all.

Iv had a years stationery out of one, a 5ft air conditioning fan, washing bowl, washing up brushes, plates, cups, glasses, lamps, and loads more.

I just cant resist them, but as Im a little under 5ft 4, I could easily end up head first in one. Must remember to have a non-showing cleavaged top on when doing that as well. :)
