Anyone have experience with drilling your own backyard suburban water well? I read about some small drills using pvc pipes and a water hose but not sure if that is really feasible. The cost of drilling a legit, large well is prohibitive.

I was thinking that since I am just 200 yds from the Arkansas river the water table is probably not too deep. A backyard water source would be invaluable for watering my Victory garden and for consumption after a major, regional meltdown.

Any thoughts, or experience?

Dig a hole as deep as posible with a auger-type post hole digger
Then set up a scaffold about 3 runs high
Take a 10' section of 3" or 4" steel gas pipe cap off one end with a eye-bolt thru the cap, and fill pipe 1/2 full of lead
set well-tip in hole with pipe atached and a coupling screwed tight
Raise the lead pipe up and let fall on the well-pipe with the coupling on
Do this for a few days/ if your arms don't fall off you will have a well
