I think a lot of illnesses are more common in cities. And also people seem to get more violent. Stress has a part in many things.

But I don't think it is just the stress, the environment is more toxic and you miss out on being somewhere alive and pretty. Also there might be a virus linked to schizophrenia and if so, the more people you meet, the higher the risk of infections.

Yes, it does. Well........crazier, anyway. LOL

By "city", I am assuming that you mean concrete canyons filled with high-rise office and apartment buildings. Humans do NOT do well, when they are jammed in close to each other in this type of city environment. As a species, we are hard-wired to crave close contact with nature.

I think it is genetic though. Most people like living close to others. People have always done that. I have a city person in my life and she really likes city life which sort of puzzled me at the beginning. But I guess people must actually like it.... She only goes with us to the cabin to tan while the rest of us are working. I know I shouldn't say anything, I live in the same city as her, but our attitudes are so different.

My wife was born and raised in the country, as was I. Now we both live on the outskirts of a major city. You deal with it. If living in a city makes you "crazy", you were crazy to begin with. People are people, and living is living.

Yes, city living takes far more tolerance, but it isn't anything most people are not capable of. Yeah, more crime and a$$holes, but overall it isn't too bad. I don't hate it enough to spend the cash to move to the sticks. That living is over hyped too much on the plus side as city living is made bad. Nothing like driving 12 miles for a half gallon of milk at $3.50 a gallon. Or getting sick and needing good medical care that's 112 miles away. Bill T.

I think we tend to see more mentally ill in the citys. They congregate there because so they can have access to public assistance and mental health care. City living may increase the average persons stress, but adaptability is the name of the game.

I'm a city boy but I also love my space, privacy and solitude.

Yeah you can have those things living in a mid-sized city, you just have to know how to go about things.

The big problem with urban areas are crowds and conjestion. I avoid these by grocery shopping at 6am on the weekend, hitting the gym at 3am and taking in a movie on a week night.

No people, no lines, no distractions, no problems = no stress.

I think it is a per capita issue with the crazies, they are just more pronounced in the city because statistically speaking, you have more people.

Even if 1 out of a million people were certified nuts, you would be hard pressed to find a nut job in a rural area. In a city with 10 million people, you would have ten nut jobs right there in a small space.

I'm using the 1:1,000,000,000 because it's easier to see, its not a realistic number. Wish it was though, that would force the 6 oclock news to find some good news instead of all bad news.

To be perfectly honest, most of the people I feared came from an urban environment. The bulk of the country folk I've known were too friendly. Most city tough guys were street smart, and not someone I'd want to tangle with. Look at it this way, would you be more comfortable running out of gas in the country and ringing a doorbell, or in a bad neighborhood? Bill T.

different stress levels always affect people in different ways...Out in a rural area there is al ot less stress, because we do not have gand bangers (wnnabes), or a lot of cars and distractions to mess with..

We do have fresh air, lots of land and mountains that are open for people to raom on, horses to ride all over the place, and just flat out wonderful silence.

Alot more nature is seen in the ways it is supposed to be.... wild and free

Let me just add this for any of you near Norman OK, or planning to drive there. I have lived many places, NYC for several years. I am convinced there are more crazies in this town than any other that I have ever been in. Up until a few years ago, there was state mental insitution there. When they let the people out they have no where to go. Between the crazies, the tweakers, the jocks on roids, frat boys....Seriously, avoid Norman OK if you can.

I lived in a city of 14,000 for three and a half years. The apartment building was three stories high. That is not big for most people but I felt suffocated half to death. People coming and going and I could hear them in the hallway. No think you to living like that. I like my quiet hermit life.

To top it off I got a deer one time and had to skin it in the parking lot. I had a major audience and attracted attention that I just did not want. The idiots had never seen a woman that could skin a deer.

I understand your point.

While you can search 1,000 small hamlets to find 1 true sociopath, a city may easily have 1,000 of them.

But the article was about more than that.

Urban living brings out the worst in people making them into loony toons.

What makes someone stressed out depends completely on the person.
I live in the city and love it, but I also enjoy the backwoods and tropical sunsets... sometimes.

The city is a great place to make money and meet amazing people, i'll live in a cabin in Wyoming when I am old.
