Just because the military wears one in Iraq is not reason enough for me to wear one in the mountains of Arizona.
I carry a bandanna everywhere, and wear a hat. It's fine for me, been fine for many years.

 

I do see your point, the bandanna has been good to me as well, and I have more NRA hats than I know what to do with.

 

It's too hot and humid in the Southeast to wear a towel wrapped around your head.

 

It doesn't get that hot and humid in Michigan, but Im wondering since they are very lightweight if dampening them would keep you cool?

 

I've been using a Black & White for more than 20+ yrs. I works great in the winter months as well.

I was actually going to buy one of those. Right now I wear a bandana around my neck or a balaclava. The shemagh's seem to be a better size, allowing me to wear it down my shirt, resisting wind more. Wardens Supply co has some pretty good prices on them.

 

Its perfect for winter driving in the truck as a scarf.

And in an emergency Id wear it as shown above to keep warm.

They just need to make them without the tassles.

I wear one wuiet often when I am out fishing. Its great sun protection and it can be wetted at put back on to help cool you off. I will also sometimes wear one when its cold and windy outside and I have to work out doors all day. It has its place and purpose but I will admit that I get a lot of weird looks at times.

 

Wearing that would get you shot here.

How about a 36"x36" red bandana, look more like a cowboy than a terrorist and serves the same purpose. They come in a dozen different colors and can be found at most western stores.

 

Yep, They work great wet in the humid heat, also keeps the skeeters off..not to mention how well they work hiding a white face in the woods.

 

I do not wear one no particular reason just dont and probably never will.

 

I've got several OD Green slings from vietnam era medical kits. That is what I use to cover my neck and head. It breaks the wind, absorbs sweat and cools me off when wet.

Maybe a boonie hat to keep the sun off my ears and neck.

I got my first one as a gift in Ramadi City (the PJCC) when one of the walls to the compound was down. It was in an effort to blend in. I've since adopted the Shemagh, and I use it in the heat, and the cold. I've used it as a sling, a towel, a blanket, and a gp rag. I've got a khaki/blk, and a grn/blk, and pick the one that fits the local terrain best. It's a functional add-on to any camo you have (say, for Turkey Hunting, as an example).

My daughter's emo friends call it my fashion scarf, then I growl at them and they run away (emo kids are skittish, ha!)

I'd have never picked up on it, had these wars not kicked off, but when I'm up in an open tail helo, somewhere above the Hindu Kush in Jan, it helps keep me warm. When I'm running to Home Depot down in Olympia in August, then it just doesn't make sense.
They've started showing up in 'Action Movies' also. (The Green Zone, From Paris with Love, The Book of Eli, et al.) So I guess the cat's out of the bag now....

I voted no. I own a couple, but I don't really wear them other than experimenting to learn a little about them. In the hot summer, I generally wear a cool collar. They absorb water and help you stay cool through evaporation. They work really well in our dry climate.

 

I have a black and red one that I use for winter. Its good for keeping the wind off you. It doesnt look as Middle eastern as most of them so I where it when I go out to the store or whatever.

 

No I dont wear one, and this is why....Because I own a hat.

 

I wear one when ever I need a hat or a face mask. Like mosquitoes in the woods, or cold air in the winter or just to freak people out. I guess they think I am Arab when I wear it. I love to shock the ignorant.

 

If its that cold around here, I got a black balaclava.

I could see using one in the winter if it was made of the

From what I have read, many of you have never worn a shemagh. Its a vary versitile item. It just works better than a hat or balaclava could. Yeah you might look like a fruit loop wearing one but hey - it works!

 

IF I had one I would use it, but I don't so bandannas, scarfs, balaclavas etc are what I use.

In addition to that, there is a cross section of youth who wear it as a part of their getup (fashion). Google "hipster" and you'll see why I want nothing to do with them. In the bush sure, but in town just because its cold out. No thanks.
