Do you support the Al Franken Amendment to the 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act?

S. Amndt. 2588 to H.R. 3326 – None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any existing or new Federal contract if the contractor or a subcontractor at any tier requires that an employee or independent contractor, as a condition of employment, sign a contract that mandates that the employee or independent contractor performing work under the contract or subcontract resolve through arbitration any claim under title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or any tort related to or arising out of sexual assault or harassment, including assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment, or negligent hiring, supervision, or retention.

Translation: The amendment would prohibit the federal government from entering into contracts with any company that block their employees from pressing criminal charges for racial discrimination or on-the-job sexual assaults as a term of their employment.
If you do not support it, why not?

Because Al Franken is about as low as it gets in the political arena. Nothing this man says can be counted on or believed. I am glad we had the good sense to get out of MN. I'm sure theres an alterior motive that will bennefit him personaly with this bill.

Why is this amendment needed? I thought it was illegal for an employer to prohibit employees from taking advantage of what is legal, including filing discrimination lawsuits?

I vote no for this reason. This is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

The reason he couldn't make a living telling jokes is because he IS a joke. I honestly think he's dim-witted (but I do believe that that's a requirement for anyone who wants to be a Democrat [or should that be Dimocrat?]).

Now, to answer your question. It's already illegal for a company to "block" an employee from pressing criminal charges against anyone so the new, proposed Amendment is unnecessary. Franken is the newest comedian to join the Dem guild so he's just trying to look like he's earning all that tax money he calls a paycheck.

It's illegal in the U.S. but not necessarily any other nation which is home to a company our government may want/need to deal with.

I doubt very much that Franken's Amendment would have much affect on those from "other nations." He is, afterall, a member of the US Government (Why? Nobody with an ounce of common sense knows.)

No. The definitions of the terms therein are far too vague and, as a result, venture too far into regulating the rights afforded to private contracts between consenting parties.

Nugent isn't stupid enough to write a bill like Al (Dim-wit) Franken or any of his Dimocrat cohorts.

Meeting with vet, service dog inspired Franken's bill

"It was really like a dream come true,'' the 36-year-old New Yorker said after learning that Franken's first measure would start a pilot program to provide dogs for veterans.

By ERIC ROPER, Star Tribune

Luis Carlos Montalvan, a disabled Iraq war veteran, was having trouble sleeping Saturday when he received a startling late-night e-mail from a friend: a chance encounter he had months earlier with Democratic Sen. Al Franken was about to produce Franken's first piece of legislation. The bill, which Franken introduced Wednesday, would create a pilot program to provide service dogs for injured veterans.

"It was really like a dream come true," said Montalvan, a journalism student in New York City, who had suggested the idea to Franken months earlier at the presidential inaugural ball in Washington.

Montalvan explained to the soon-to-be senator that his service dog, Tuesday, helps him cope with several fractured vertebrae and a serious head injury he suffered during an attack near the Iraq-Syrian border in 2007.

"[Franken] was very genuinely interested and concerned," recalled the 36-year-old, who had taken the golden retriever to the ball.

A couple of weeks later, Montalvan got a call on his cell phone "out of the blue." On the other end was a familiar voice: "Hey Luis, it's Al."

Though he talked to Franken for months after that about possible legislation, Montalvan had no idea it would be Franken's first bill until reading the e-mail that contained an op-ed Franken had written about the bill.

As more veterans return from Iraq, service dogs are emerging as an innovative way to provide vets with both mental and physical support. The animals, which undergo intensive training, help their owners retrieve items, remind them to take medication and, in Montalvan's case, help them keep their balance. Canine companionship also lessens the effects of post traumatic stress disorder, a growing problem for returning veterans.

"The way [Tuesday] helps me psychologically is at the very least equal to, if not more important than, the physical," said Montalvan, who walks with a cane.
