What reasons do you have for your answer? I never have. The upcoming one will be the fourth of my adulthood. Only once have I had to argue and demand that they leave my property.

No I do not answer the census questionaire (they get the info from my employment record) but I do work for the Census (2000 was my first and this year will be my second). The pay is really good ($15.00 - $30.00 dollars an hour) and the time that you work is up to you. I worked when I wanted to and took my 2 children with me (they played in the car when I pulled into a driveway to work). You have to take a test but it is easy and most everyone that applies gets a job, there is overtime- you write down the hours you work and the miles you drive (get payed for milage) and they pay you (on your word of how many hours you work). I had to go door to door in neighborhoods, most were nice-some were quite rude. I was only doing my job, if we come upon a property that had no treaspassing signs we were assisted by the county sherrifs office. We are considered goverment employes and anything that happens to us is automatically federal charges (or at least that is what we are told). I only had 2 that I had to have the assistance of the sheriffs office, the ones that do not participate we get the info from neighbors (who are always willing to tell everything they know about you), family (we have the info linking family members to you-we also have phone numbers>even the ones that are unlisted or cellular), employers (past or present) and passers by that may know about you. If none of these are available some will just put the number in the household (by guessing-look for # of cars or amount of toys in the yard ) and move on. If you want th info to be correct and not off the wall reporting from your neighbors participate.

I find this post very disturbing.

Why it's a job, the census has to be done. The census tells your state what kind of services they need and where they need to add money to what services. The census tells you how many illegals have moved into your area and what you may need to be doing to help move them along. The census has lead sheriffs deputies to more than one child molester in our community alone. The census has allowed others to know how many is in there community -how much it is growing and how the projection of how it will grow in the years to come.

I worked for the census for 4 months and made over $14,000 before taxes-it's a job that pays.

There are many jobs that pay that I would find morally objectionable. Poking into the business of private citizens on behalf of Big Brother is one of them.

At least you made more than 30 pieces of silver.

I didn't fill it out right away and they sent me a nasty letter saying it's the law. I was just lazy and postponed it and then sent it in three weeks after getting it. About two weeks later, I get a call on the phone it's the Census and they want to varify the information what a waste of money sending a follow up letter and then calling.

I work for the state anyway (morals ), the money feeds my children and at least I wasn't out stealin and robbing. When you have to fill the info out anyway (reqired by law) it is not really poking into private buisness (they ask how many in household, pay bracket for household and 1 other question-these are the only required questions)-if they would have sent the paper in I wouldn't have a job going door to door filling out the paper work myself now would I? The majority (90%) of the ones that I have to go door to door are people that can not read or write or the elderly, 5% are one that have moved and we have to verify and the other 5% that did not get the form or the ones that do not fill it out on purpose. Out of the ones that get referred to us (my area in 2000 was 1500 households) only 6 in our whole county decided not to fill out the paperwork. The majority fills out the paperwork no questions asked.

There was a lot of talk about this in the media last time (2000). Some places had as high as 20% that didn't do it. They threatened fines under federal law. The fine is $50 and no one was ever charged. They don't want to push it in court.

They didn't push it because of people like me who investigated and got the info they needed. If the census is able to get the info they need through friends/neighbors then all is good and no one is charged-the charge or fine is very rare. I did guesstimates on some of the houses (had to be verified by my supervisor) that did not come to the door or who we couldn't get while they were at home. If we hadn't then those people could have been fined-If we reported info that is not true we can be fined, inprisoned for making a false statement on a federal questionaire.

Be nice to the people that come to your door, they are only doing there job (and we all know that there are not that many jobs to spare in these days-they are at least trying to earn a living to stay off welfare or assistance)-If you do not want to participate tell them leave the paper with you and you will fill it out and send it in (they will gladly give you the form and leave-you then can do with it what you want).

Good luck with them getting to the door, I'm sure my Rotties will have some fun with the trespassers. Government has no business coming on my property and questioning me. The IRS has financial records through tax returns, that's good enough. Anything else is none of their business. Come with a warrant, or get to steppin'.

My neighbors would give the same info as I would about them: "Don't know him. No, you can't have my name either."

If there are dogs or a fence with no treaspassing that is where the sheriff comes in (federal questionaire = sheriffs help), he escorts the census worker onto the property to either drop off the paper or fill it out in the presence of the owner. We ran into this several times in 2000, when the sheriff showed up they were usally more than willing to fill out the paper work. it really isn't that big of a deal, takes around 2 minutes to do and there really is no identifing info other than the address. Yes the federal goverment already has the info but you know them the loose everything:D:.

I'm sorry, but I just have to laugh about the census. I mean really.

I've used the 'census' to track genealogy in my family and most of the time the information was incorrect. I know this because of other documentation that I used to verify.

In one case my great-great Grandmother was at home, she was around 12 at the time. She didn't know anyone's proper names, so she gave him all the nicknames. Mama, Big Pa, Junior, Bubbs, Verge, Flossie Mae, Gert, Tory and Uncle Tass. Uncle Tass was...um....a house 'helper'. (if you understand my meaning).

Isn't it a little dangerous to take your kids with you and leave them in the car?

If you already have the info linking family members and you already have phone numbers and employers names...and you already have my address....doesn't that make you redundant?
