Do you give your dogs vegetables?

Our Scottish terrier will eat any vegetable; turnips, carrot peels, celery, she doesn’t care. The other dog eats them because the terrier is eating them. So I was thinking I should dry some veggies, grind it up to powder, and start mixing a little in my dogs’ food every time they eat. Couldn’t hurt, could it? Or are there vegetables that would hurt dogs?

We had dogs that liked; 1) peas, 2) cantaloupe, and 3) pears. They would beg for peas while we shelled them and were quick to scarf up any that we'd drop. They would steal pears out of a bucket on the porch and I had one of 'em climb over a garden fence to get a ripe cantaloupe.

Almost seems like they have a sweet tooth. (?)

My wolf dogs would eat almost everything. Penny would eat garlic in her dry dog food if I sautéed it in butter otherwise it would be in the bowl when she was done. I never ate leftovers for like 16 years - I cooked and ate what I wanted and they got the rest. I fed them garlic and brewer's yeast every day. Never fleas and maybe 5 ticks between them in 10+ years.

I made some really spicy elk taco's once (the lid came off the cayenne shaker). It was took hot for Penny but Perry wolfed it down and then would go stick his face in the water bucket.

Hah! My wife’s name is Penni. We’ve always named our dogs after historical people; Kaiser (Wilhelm), Winston (Churchill), Otto (von Bismarck), and now Ivan. But we don’t pronounce Ivan in the Russian way.

My old GSD was an omnivore. He especially loved broccoli, along with any other cooked vegetable. GSD 2.0 only eats his kibble and wet dog food. He doesn't like dog treats but loves American cheese singles. So go figure. He's a young guy and he's hyper focused on tasks and procedures it seems. I suspect that down the road he will be less particular about his food. .

The dogs get plate scrapes, so they do get the incidental veggie. I used to cook “gruel” for them, chicken, rice, potato, and any excess veggies in the fridge.

We used to have a Great Dane that would graze in the orchard & garden……she would pick her own figs, strawberries, blackberries, watermelons, zucchini, etc. Then again she was a hunter as well, she’d kill & eat rabbits, raccoons, feral piglets, gophers etc……..a true survivalist.

Ive got a rhodesian ridgeback, he acts like he wants vegetables. When i give him one he will gingerly take it walk into the next room, and set it on the ground. He'll stare at it for 20 seconds and then look at me like im the idiot.

Of course, any kind meat trimmings he goes nuts for and i swear he doesnt even taste 'em.

Last dog loved fruits and veggies. I would regularly give him pumpkin, sweet potatoes, green beans. He would patiently wait and stare at anyone eating a banana, knowing he'd get the last bite. And when we were done with an apple,, we'd hold the core and he would nibble it with his front nippy teeth like it was corn on the cob. It was hilarious taking him blackberry picking with me, he'd find the ripe ones and carefully nibble them off the briars as to not get prickled. No tomatoes, melons, or squash in the garden were ever safe from him. Except cukes. He did not like cukes.

New pup is getting a raw carrot every day, to clean his teeth and to deworm. And it gives him something other than my table legs to chew on. He has also had sweet potatoes and pumpkin, and likes those. After he is completely housebroken, I'll introduce more veggies into his diet.
