Apart from the wannabe warlords or Hitlers which exist in the Militia movement (and these types also exist in ALL other parts of the community - including the Survivalist community), I think most of them have their hearts in the right place. I trust them in that respect, but I do not trust their operational art or capability.

I talk to some of these folks who have tried in vain to recruit me in the past and I see literally and figuratively: big fat targets.

I think this might be slowly changing from the 1990s militia mindset to something more realistic with the massive influx of OEF and OIF veterans who have seen the dark side in action.

Where I live

The reason I put this thread up here is because where I live we do have a "militia".

Some of the people I've gotten to know were ok, then some of them were not so ok. I've had bad experience with the so called leadership and found them a lil too paranoid. They have "discussions" about people and accuse them of things and then have a so called trial without the accused being present or even having knowledge of such things let alone being able to bring their evidence and side into it.

Also my so called "friends" did on several occassions stab me in the back. I guess this is why I cannot, will not trust a militia. As for a group of TRUE friends, these are the only people I can trust during a shtf scenario.

There are a variety of militia "flavors", I like patriots but have very little use for Faux military wannabes.

I have met a couple of guys that I would trust as allies in mutual aid situations but by and far I am inclined to think the militia is a major target once the shtf.

It would seem however, we are getting closer to finding out who we can trust.

keep your powder dry and your hatchet sharp!

Here is a discussion for y'all. Do you trust people who "claim" to be your last ditch protection? I guess what I'm saying is, Who will you trust WHEN shtf?
Your question is divided into 2 sections, and I do not see them as related. Every able male is a member of the militia. The Militia Act of 1792 put this into place.

http://www.constitution.org/mil/mil_act_1792.htm

If I understand it right, there was another law that set forth the national guard and did away with the civilian militia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Guard

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_10_of_the_United_States_Code

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_32_of_the_United_States_Code

Your first line of defense is yourself.

Your second line of defense
is the local law enforcement, which most citizens belong to and do not even know it. If a police officer directs you to help him, you must. The local sheriff can also call out the citizens to help him.

Your third line of defense are federal officers - FBI, BATF, national gaurd, army ...... depending on the situation.

I have been through a couple of hurricanes and the national guard usually shows up a day or two later. I have seen a civilian militias posed to defend neighborhoods directly after a disaster - these and also known has neighborhood watch programs. These are your friends, family and neighbors

To me, a militia or civil defense force is any number of civilians armed and banded together to protect their property and their neighbors property. After a disaster, the street you live on and your neighborhood will be your top priority. No one from the outside will be there to help you, it will be you, your family, friends and neighbors. But your friends will be in the same boat as you and probably on the other side of town.

To answer the question, after a disaster there will be three groups of people:
1. You, your friends, family and neighbors
2. The local PD, reserve units, law enforcement brought in from outside areas.
3. The national guard

Your direct safety is your responsibility. The PD and the national guard will be more worried about looters, and directing traffic.

I just wanna take this time to thank everybody who has thus far responded to this thread. Everybody has an opinion and that is exactly why I asked this question. Also, another reason, I believe , like kev said, your first line of defense is yourself. I have been asked and I have been told that the people will totally rely on the military for the safety of themselves and family. I've also have had the local militia inform me that they're are there to fight.

Now I know this sounds like militia bashing but I'm not. At this point and time I have absolutely no faith in anybody else except for my closest friends. I do believe the militia would mobilize but how they would operate is beyond me. The liberal media has pretty much destroyed the faith of the people to rely on them. Everytime you hear about a militia in the news its pretty much negative. This is unfortunate, as some of the members of our local militia are pretty much good fellas and honest. My doubts of the militia being effective, stands by the effectiveness of the leadership.

Now I'm not saying this because they're a bunch of gold ol boys or because you gotta be on the "list" of favorites. I believe most would not be effective because of the lack of military and leadership experience. It's one thing to be a manager at wally world and a whole different thing to have actual combat experience. It's my understanding that all you really need to be a leader in a militia is the vote of confidence by your unit. I guess that a popular vote gives you leadership abilities.

Unfortunately I don't have much faith in our government either. The military is totally controlled by them also. Regular active duty, reserve, and national guard. So what does that leave us?

Local law enforcement, This could be ok as long as you have an honest law enforcement in your area. In my area, I feel confident in our leo's. So give these ideas some thought before you commit yourselves to a cause or idea.

You got that right! Worry about your self and your family first. Everthing else will fall into place.

I go with the thinking of "DTA"

(Don't Trust Anyone)

Depends on the militia. As a white, non-Christian, couldn't care less about gays, psychotically capitalistic, non-rascist male, I think I'll offend many of them on some grounds or another.

I put not a member, plain and simple. It depends on the militia as to if I trust them. Seen some supremacist stuff, and seen some militant whack job stuff. Some seem very legit and concerned about the happenings. Depends I guess, but I'm not in one.

There were several Rep. of Texas milita types in my home town. One guy used to drive around in an old truck with a huge sign with all sorts of insane slogans plastered across it. He'd tool around town and argue with soccer mom's in the parking lots of grocery stores. Ah, the 90's. I almost miss them. These guys had some kinda stand off down on the trinity, and I actually think they drug it out a few years. I don't want to sound snide or condescending, because I'm sure plenty of people in militia's are good people, hell, these guys may have even been good guys, but when you dress, act and look, like a joke, that's what people think. leave the camo clothes in the closet until it's time to go to the woods, and most importantly, if you've never earned a beret, don't freakin' wear one. You don't know how to shave it, shape it, or wear it, and you don't look cool. Even with the tiny airborne wings from the airborne school you didn't go to, because you were 4-f, for whatever reason. Luckily for me, I have several friends I served with within driving distance.

If you are a able bodied male citizen of the USA, between 18 & 45 years old, and not a member of the National Guard you are a member of the unorganized militia.

The currently effective Militia Act

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and . . . under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are --

(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and

(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Militia can be trusted far more than the crooks and murderers in our government.
They can also be trusted more than the lackies (cops, suits) that do the government's dirty work.
Of course the traitorous media is going to demonie them, the media attempts to stain anything that's patriotic and anti NWO or anti socialist.

I've seen too many backwoods organized militias that have no clue where their threat will be coming from. They will be useless and will most likely get you killed in some race riot. If I'm going to die, it's going to be defending the constitution, not by joining some racist group who have watched "Mad Max" and "Triumph of the Will" too many times.

I would join a group who's main goal is to restore the constitution and fight those that shredded it.
