I've made something very similar to this before and it actually works quite well. Just thought I'd toss it out there for those putting together a BoB on a shoe string budget....or just general info.

Made a few of those myself, an even more simple model is the "cat can" stove which I have used with much success. I'm also a HUGE fan of the "Choke Hazard" alcohol stove by minibull designs, as well as many of minibulls designed stoves. I use the "choke hazard" when ultra-light camping. It was my sole stove on a 2,100 mile hike up the Appalachian trail.

My choke hazard made it 6 months with daily use, and frequent use multiple times per day. Still going strong. I think the key to can stoves, cat-can stoves, and alcohol stoves in general are their simplicity. No moving parts to break, no O-rings to replace, no handles to snap off, no canisters to be replaced.
