for sewing leather specially heavy thick leather i have never used a awl , they are fine for thinner leather and canvass , all i do is put the 2 pieces or 3 pieces depending if you use a spacer piece together and drill a 1/16" - 1/8" hole through all the pieces then put rubber cement on the leather to help hold it then take the thread with a big needle and start sowing ! the big needles can be bought from any place that sells needles !

you did do a great job on it so keep going with different projects !

tandy leather has always been the place i use for leather craft stuff for the last 35+ years

I thought about stitching it but I don't know how to stitch it right and I wasn't sure if I should use wax thread or leather for stitches. Also sizing the hole for the handle was a pain in the but since the base of the fiskars axe is bigger the the shaft. Also I'm gonna cut off the brass and silver fasteners and replace with some gun metal ones I got from and Indian store out here. I was thinking of putting some .leather lace around the edge. If I knew more about leather working I would make a form fitted hard leather one.
