Hi guys,

I am usually a open to everything, will listen and consider any conspiracy type of guy, but I think my friend has gone over board with this one.

He keeps saying that all the new Digital televisions and the digital telivision converter boxes have monitoring chips inside them or something of that nature. I personally think this it too much conspiracy for even me. Thankfully, I don't have a tv, but this would be my opinion on the matter. To put a monitoring device in every home would be too massive of an endeavor to keep quite. Second of all, America is TV kingdom, way too much data to analyze/store. Last but not least, how would they be getting there data, I doubt its a hard drive and don't think they would have transmitters inside of them. Just sounds too wack to be true, but what are your opinions on the matter?

I don't own a TV, haven't watched it for over 30 years. But I would guess monitoring your computer would be easier and more fruitful.

That would be interesting... put some voice recognition software in the box to listen for word combinations like "Honey, I'm going to the shooting range" or "I hate Obama" and flag those households for further scrutiny, and then turn on the recorders.

You don't need a digital converter box if you have cable, so the cable companies would have to be in on it as well... perhaps they already are?

It would all come down to logistics; sorting through all that data without the proper criteria would be like trying to get a teaspoon of water from a fire hose.

Your "friend" huh? ;)

I wouldn't worry about it to much, but then again I do not have cable nor do I own a television. Not many people my age can say that. I use to watch it all the time, now I can't even turn it on for 30 seconds without wanting to take my AK47 to it.

I have heard people dissecting these plasma and lcd tvs and HD DVR boxes to find tiny cameras and microphones inside... i'd ditch the tv.... also watch out for all of the new laptops... they are built with cameras and mics right in the screen.

Tivo boxes do send back to the service a list of shows watched, but supposedly they are for statistical uses, and the information is also not supposed to be identifiable. But if someone has nothing better to do in their lives than to monitor my TV viewing, they don't have much of a life.

I have it from the Cox Cable service guy I asked the digital boxes can tell what you are watching and that info is used in marketing.
Also Nielson used to have a deal on your TV to record what channels you watched.
It was several years ago but any channel tuned for more than 15 seconds was logged.
Now from what I understand they simply notify the cable company you are in their survey and switches are switched.

They have already been putting microphones and habit monitoring software in cable and dish boxes. Their stated reason which makes sense is "Marketing research". But I doubt it ends there. I work in computers and let me tell you, nothing you do on the internet is secret.

They will have ways to track you and it is a fact they have had similar devices before. Now if you really want to talk conspiracy look at the ability of government to listen in on your cell phone even if it's not on. Sounds crazy but it's true.

Who knows how "they" do even half the things that turn out to be true? Look at something as simple as On Star from GM. It monitors everything and transmits back the info "they" deem necessary. I've now seen ads on TV trying to sell it to everyone, $99. Converter box seems a little far fetched but who knows.

An old saying I ran across: "There are two ways to sleep good at night, be ignorant, or be prepared."

My new laptop does have a camera in the top of the frame. So what they going to take pics of me looking at my monitor? I'm sure if they wanted them they could find better pics of me!

Great, a 3 year old thread was resurrected, just to tin foil around in it some more?

I work for a local TV station. We're not collecting any data.

If you have a digital cable box, they can collect information about who's watching what and when. They don't listen or watch what's happening in your bedroom. I've taken apart a couple of TVs, there are no cameras or microphones in there.

Guys, this is a 3 year old thread. And an idiotic one at that. Please, let it die again.

If TSHTF , there would be no electricity or TV any way - they could only monitor test patterns.

I would say this is BS rated. Wouldn't believe it would affect us even if it were true.

Hey, if "they want to know how much soft porn I watch, then they can send me a log and I'll fill it out for them. By the way nielson sent me logs to fill out and I did it. Was that a mistake? I got a crisp new dollar bill for my trouble.
