Did an embezzlement scandal force Sarah Palin to resign?

Max Blumental reports on The Daily Beast that Sarah Palin may have quit her job today because she was trying to avert a major, yet-to-be-disclosed corruption scandal. The gist of the rumor is that an Alaska building company called Spenard Building Supplies (SBS) was awarded a contract by Palin to build a hockey arena in Wasilla, AK, and in return, SBS helped construct Palin’s home:

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin’s snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice’s Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few “buddies,” according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.

Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an addition $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.

Alaska bloggers have reported in recent weeks that “a long simmering embezzelment/IRS scandal is still being looked at by the feds.” In her press conference today, Palin asked the public to “trust me with this decision and know that it is no more politics as usual.” But she also bemoaned “political operatives” who have “descended on Alaska” to investigate “all sorts of frivolous ethics violations.” Palin said this “politics of personal destruction” was one of the key motivating factors behind her decision today.

This rumor is very interesting and we will see how it plays out in the coming days. Personally, I found her resignation to be quite shocking simply because it doesn't make sense. If she resigned to focus on the 2012 Presidential election, how would resigning help her? Couldn't she have finished the term? The way I see it, if she does plan to run for President in 2012, this resignation doesn't help her. (I can see the mud-slinging ads now: "Sarah Palin, bailed out as governor, will she bail out as President? I'm John Mc" ... err ... :))

The good at heart are always the ones to get slammed. Look at the past and see if the 15 ethics suits and several other investigates are factual or just irritation to get her out of the limelight. She is true to heart and a patriot and one hell of an American. She pulled out to get under the radar and she'll be coming back with a vengence......wait and see.

Coming back as what? An analyst for Fox maybe, but I'm as sure as the sky is blue that she will never be president. Bet on it.

This makes sense. It fits in with Palin and he husband's history.

I really hope this is the truth and it keeps her out of further politics. She belongs on talk radio or cohosting with Rush.

It's funny watching the socialists foaming at the mouth with irrational happiness because one of their perceived enemies in the left vs. right fake competition is down.

It would kill all of you Obama zombies to know that Bush, Cheney, Obama, Clinton, Palin, McCain, etc. are good buddies and laugh at all of you fools who spend your life's energy on the ramparts fighting a fake war.

I agree, and I liked how Jessie Ventura compared this to professional wresting. :D:

No, it doesn't make sense.

Why would a construction company build a house for Palin BEFORE she runs for governor and having no idea if she would win - hoping for lucrative contracts down the road.

There are too many variables that could have interfered with this plan.

I think Sarah Palin is a true AMERICAN woman of strong faith, excellent parenting and smart-as-a-whip. I like her folksy style and classic down-home common sense as a government leader. This view is bourne out by her high national poll ratings and the hundreds of requests she has to turn down for public speaking engagements, etc.

There is strong grassroots support for someone like Sarah Palin. This posting and other similar rumours and snide comments based on zero facts are just typical examples of the left-wing liberals and progressives trying to stop a huge boulder rolling down the mountain with their bare hands. It won't work.

BTW: I am a 52YO white male, registered Republican and thinking of changing to Libertarian. So my support of Sarah Palin is based on many factors. Her being female has no bearing for me, though I DO like feisty women.

Palin comes off as a putz to me. A vice presidential candidate due to a botched political maneuver which helped McCain lose the election. That helped me look at Ron Paul. Glad I found Ron Paul as a candidate.
We'll have to agree to disagree on Mrs. Palin.

But I HAVE to agree with you on Ron Paul!

I'll be calling BS.
The Obama campaign and their media shills sent droves of lawyers to Wasilla and Anchortown to dig up the dirt on her and all they found was trivial BS about her kids pokeboy being a typical White middle class punk and her husbands being a secessionist.
So they DIDN'T find this and crow about it during the campaign.....
I
Don't
Think
so.

She quit to come to the lower 48 {or is that 55 according to Abu Hussein?} and stump the next few years for President.
It is impossible to do that from Alaska. She is going to be in every limelight the Repubics can put her in being right now she is the only really popular political entity with an (R) in from of her handle.
She scares the crap out of so called "progressives" for whatever reason.
Matters not to me.
I won't likely be voting either party ever again.

It's alright cause it is highly unlikely that America will go through another election in the current political system.

I am not sure that the US will make it to the next Christmas as a country, never mind 2012.

Wow, its one thing to agree with her ideology but to suggest she is smart is laughable.
And YOU were the governor of a state WHEN?

Or candidate for VP?

Just say'in. :)

She has a lot of homework to do if she is going to run in 2012. Being governor means she has the people's business to attend to rather that working on getting up to speed on isssues. She really needs to work on dropping the "Aw shucks by golly" bit if the people are going to take her serious.

An early announcement, or thought of one, from anyone puts NObammy in more of a campaign mode than he already is.
