One of the things that attracted us to purchase our home was a skylight in the kitchen that made it so bright and cheery a work area

It just dawned on me now,, with the heavy drapes we use to conserve heat in this season..,, how dark this house is , and how much darker it would be with the windows totally plywooded up against a hurricane , tornado or pillaging mobs during a civil disorder

then I realized, that the other end of the house has one small central hallway off which the bath, bedrooms and Dining room open and that if I put a skylight in the roof with a light tube thru the attic space to the ceiling---- --( a light tube is simply an insulated framed enclosure from the skylight to a sheet of clear acrylic flush with the ceiling below) ------we could have daylight illuminating the hallway brightly and enough into the other rooms to get around in them..and yet maintain some protection against intrusion by windblown debris or intruders via the windows
