DNA extraction done by the Max-Planck Institute in Germany have found that Neanderthals are around 99.9% identical to our DNA. A chimpanzee is 98.8% identical to ours.
**** Sapiens and Neanderthals split somewhere along the evolutionary time line, yet we lived beside them. Archaeological evidence shows that Neanderthal and modern humans shared Europe for awhile. Neanderthals disappeared within a few thousand years after contact with us.
We are so closely similar to Neanderthal...yet so very different. That small percent that makes us different is fascinating to me. It's like a mother having 3 daughters. Each very similiar to the mother, yet different. Language is the same...similarities between languages and so many differences.
And that is one of my questions..What do you think it would have been like to live beside another human like Neanderthal? Frightening would be my guess, or more curious?
Do you think Cro Magnons played a role in the extinction of Neanderthals?
I understand we made tools and weapons far more advanced than Neanderthals which made us successful hunters even though our bodies were not built for the harsh Europe environment like Neanderthals, our ability to use our brain made the difference. But do you think we hunted them down and killed them off?
If you look at the way we tend to treat each other today, harshly...maybe we (Cro-Magnon) also treated the Neanderthals harshly and killed them off
