I've been thinking of doing a credit card holder full of survival cards with things like how to start a fire etc. There seem to be a lot you can buy, but you know I'm on a very limited budget so I've been looking for free printables.

I found one today with some stuff:

(NB Make sure the picture is the right size before printing as they can come out too small to be read)

I do have the Wiseman pocket SAS guide to fall back on if I need to photocopy anything.

Does anyone have any links etc to FREE printables for this? They need to be about the size of a Tabacco tin.

PS I'v found this booklet sort, it's not small enough for my needs but someone might to like to print off a copy etc:

I hope Edward4576 responds; I think he has some cards that are along the lines of what you're looking for.

PurdyBear, I hope you were kidding about needing a card with instructions about how to start a fire. If you don't know how to do that, you need to go out and practice doing that, now. The time to do it for the first time is NOT when you need it to survive.

I've always wondered about this. I have a Army field manual and eatable plants book in my BOB. Memorizing the info has been on my to-do list as I think of ways to lighten my pack. I just can't bring myself to it because my memory is terrible. I'm concerned I'll memorize it, take it out, then forget it.

Same here. I'd make up a set of cards but I'd forget where I put them.
Best way to ingrain into memory is do do it. Take a manual, go out and find the edible plant, and eat it. The visual clues, taste, and texture get impressed into your mind much better than the book knowledge. Same with making fires. Understand the basic principle and you can remember much better. You won't have to remember all the text.

That file is set up as playing cards so I used an Avery business card template and did some cut and paste work added some info I found out on the web and printed to business card stock (found at office depot) and voila had my self a set of playing cards that I added to my BOB. Dual purpose, survival info and entertainment if you have the time. Also useful for getting rescued as well...just play solitaire... someone will eventually show up with "black eight on red nine".

What if?

Your reply got me thinking of what-if in another direction.

What if you made up cards with different scenarios written on them. For instance a meal from wild edibles or made from scratch meal using what you have on hand or you have a week to source 5 gallons of fuel using something legal and not using money.

Or make anti bacterial cream. Other uses for metal cans that normally go to the landfill (soup cans and the like.)

It might be interesting and certainly different.
