Some examples of coyote tracks.

Notice you can see the toe/finger nail mark at the end of the track. If this was a cat track, the tips of the claws would be retracted so you could not see them.

I took these pictures on a recent hunting trip.

We have a coyote problem in our area...because of the dogs I'm not affected much by it, but a acquaintance of mine had his blue heeler's face torn up pretty good by one this spring. His larger dog (Retriever mix) saved her, but this is why I keep large dogs in with my smaller ones...a lot of the regional predators will take smaller dogs, if there is not a larger packmate out running with them.

I would like to see some dog tracks compared next to Coyote tracks to see the difference.

I've done quite a bit of non-hunting tracking of coyotes, and have noticed that their stance is somewhat different than domesticated dogs. Coyotes tend to stand with less of their pad on the ground, as if they're always at-the-ready to dig in and run. Domesticated dogs tend to rest more on their pads, as if they're ready to be given a "treat". Yes, we DO spoil our pooches!

Funny thing, but the last two times I've been in the desert, one of my buddies just had to have his "boom box" on, playing country/western music. Me? I'd rather have the peace and quiet, but....! Anyway, that country/western music attracted packs of coyotes both times! One pack came within about 10' of our camp site when they started "singing" along with Garth Brooks! The other pack wasn't quite that close, probably more like 25'....but they weren't howling, they were "singing"!

(P.S.: On another camping/shooting trip, the vibrations from a "boom box" caught the attention of a Mojave Green rattle snake! It was slithering right for our camp site!)
