Hi,

Lurked for a while and am clearly new I would think by this question but what should I get. I a bit of money to spend and want to know if pre 64 or rounds would be best. If rounds is generic good or would eagles be best? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but I'm not sure. I searched and while I found a ton of super useful info, nothing specific.

I appreciate the help.

Figure I have a grand to start with!

My experience w/ the gold & silver coin & bullion trade says that rounds are not nearly as recognized & accepted as 90% 'junk' circulated U.S. coins. There are so many producers of rounds, ingots, 'special edition' silver & gold whatevers that John Q would not recognize them if you were in a position to need to barter them, if that's your intention. On the other hand, If you're looking for pure investments, the rounds should work for you. Do yourself a favor, establish a buy back commission price with your dealer behind hand.

Go with the best deal you can find, which is usually rounds and bars. There is a difference between rounds and coins. Coins have a nominal value minted on them and they will always be worth at least that value. Rounds and bars just go by the current market price which could theoretically go to zero, but that hasn't happened in thousands of years. Coins are more respected but come with a premium price. If you are just getting into it, go with some silver buffalo or walking liberty rounds.

When you buy new rounds, you are not only paying the current price of silver, but you are paying for the minting costs (including a profit to the minter), handling and shipping cost to your dealer, dealers profit and overhead.

When you buy junk silver coins, you are paying for silver, and depending where purchased, shipping.

I prefer dealing in coins, and so will the people you trade with.

I'd say get some silver eagles to hold worth, but mostly get "junk" silver. I have been buying mostly silver dimes, many under spot. Coins will be much more recognizable than rounds. Joe Sixer isn't going to know who the blazes "sunshine mining corp" is or whoever.

I use a coin company near where I live and have been doing business with them for many, many years. There are other big scale operations but I have not used them. I would agree that kitco would be a good starting place and then look in the area in which you live or a neighboring county-imo

We Like "Street Silver" Old US Coins And Why ...

Like you said, pre '64 or '61 USA old junk worn silver coins with no collectability except the 90% silver content. Dimes, quarters, halfs and silver dollars.

We frequent our regional gold, coin and jewelry store. Pay cash. Be careful of the new structuring laws. A little bit of silver can go a long ways during SHTF.

But do not get too much. Also lots of things must come together for the small size coins to be of value. Street silver has a following out here in SW OR USA.

I was shown a fake silver bar. One ounce silver rounds might be too valuable, thus the smaller junk old silver US coins. Our small stash is for bad inflation.

I'm sure what was meant was pre '65. Not sure what pre '61 designates, as dimes, quarters and halves were minted in 90% silver dated up to 1964, and started again in 1992 to present in collector proof form.

1935 was the last year for 90% silver dollars.
