Just a heads up to those of you who like to recycle coffee cans into neat things like hobo stoves.

I just opened my 'wake up' roast from Maxwell House (the larger 33 oz can) this morning and guess what?
It's not METAL anymore!

Besides changing the top piece from sealed metal to an aluminum foil peal back piece, the entire body is a piece of cardboard.
You can't tell it from the outside really, but the inside has a curved diagonal cardboard pressed line and you can see where it's a painted cardboard!

This wouldn't really matter on a normal day, but I'm sure that it might affect long term storage, and this cardboard can would definitely not be able to be used as a metal can might.

I have noticed that coffee prices have almost doubled recently and so I switched to this 'wake up' roast from Max House as it was cheaper on Amazon. I'm not sure if any other brands have done this, but I'll bet they will soon.

Damn. I like my morning coffee but I will not pay for it if the price gets too high, just on principle mostly. I'll just switch to tea, or start learning my wilderness coffees early.

Does anyone know of a good deal on coffee going on now?

Does anyone have an alternative recipe from wild plants that works for them?
Thanks!

Those plastic containers aren't all that bad for different things. As for metal cans, if you've got some #10 food stored, you'll have a life time supply of them.

My question is...if anyone is familiar with those plastic cans with the handles, do you know how best to get that coffee smell out?

Have you got a dollar general nearby? I get their store brand and it ALMOST tastes like Folgers. It's just not quite as smooth. Several dollars a can cheaper and the cans are METAL still.

I've been buying double our coffee usage for a couple years. Just to be safe. :thumb:
Thanks for the tip. I used to get one of the cheaper brands at Wal-mart that was like $3/can, and it was metal. I was in there a few weeks ago and I saw they redesigned the can - it was taller, thinner, was only 10oz, and was more $. Recently I've been getting it from Aldis - it's $2.50/can there, but it's not the metal can. I'll have to stop by Dollar General and see what they have. Those metal cans are very useful.

Soak a coffee filter or napkin in vinegar and seal it up for a week then wash it out well.

It's very hard to get ALL the coffee smell out but that gets most of it and what's left is at least a sanitary residual that won't contaminate your stuff in the can.

I use the plastic folgers cans with the handles for storing individually wrapped stuff. Like condiments, candies, and seasoning packets. The cans store perfectly on a chain hanging from the ceiling next to my fridge. Just mark the contents on the lids and you have easy access to all of them.

It just went up from $5 to $5.50 for the #10 cans at our local dollar general. The folgers is almost $10 now

Thanks for the tips!
I reuse the blue plastic Max House jugs with the handles for canisters for my dry milk (I use instead of creamer) and sugar, coffee smell was gone when I rinsed them out. HOWEVER, apparently the lid doesn't seal as tightly as I once thought it did b/c those little crazy ants just got into my sugar sitting on the countertop!
I've got a Dollar General, MaKettle, thanks, I'll check it out.
Idk why the price of coffee just recently went so high?!?!

I knew many coffee brands switched from metal to plastic, I try to use the plastic coffee cans as best I can. But I felt duped when I bought the 'wake up' roast and they were made from cardboard and they went so far as to try to mimic the metal can!
Indignant, but not surprised.

I have a ton of metal cans in my shed, I use them for almost everything, they are good for storing brass, but the plasric ones are better for brass. I noticed the price of coffee went up a month or two ago, I cannot for the life of me figure out why the price has went up. My favorite brew went up 3bucks
