In many ways China is smart. They watched the economic consequences of the Cold War arms race between the US and Russia. As well as the economic drain of small foreign wars. China's military focus has be largely defensive. They dont get involved in costly foreign military campaigns that require the reach out and touch someone capabilities of a large Navy. If they ever engaged another superpower it would be Nuclear warfare. However they lack the means to protect economic assets outside their own border from smaller countries. They dont have military bases scattered around the globe. If a rogue nation cuts off their shipping how are they gonna deal with that? Im surprised they waited this long.

I try to buy as much as I can made in the USA. Many things we just dont manufacture. Probably a losing battle given very few seem to care anymore.

Yeah, no kidding, I don't think anyone's stated otherwise. The discussion is about the ramifications of this for our country. Just like we discuss the details and significance of droughts,famines,wars,earthquakes,solar flares and lots of other things we can't prevent.

 

So they have a carrier or three, it will be a long time before Chinese navy carrier would be any kind of viable threat to the US or our navy. It takes a lot more then just putting a carrier out to sea, a whole task force of ships and a couple attack subs to protect it. They are just now learning carrier operations. I think if they ever tried to go up against us their carrier would end up deep six-ed pretty quick

 

They'll build up their skills and experience first, then pick on smaller fish later, finally when the USA's turn come's they'll be much stronger.

Don't forget China has a massive gender imbalance. Lot's of men, not so many ladies.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong they do have a really long way to go. Like I was saying this is their R&D phase of trying to get a carrier group together. I am sure once they have one out together and fielded for a while they will definitely build more especially seeing as how they are already asserting their power across the region.

Now if obummer goes ahead and reduces our navy substantially like he plans then it would be a lot easier for them to match our might, not necessarily on the tech side but on the numbers side.

China has boasted of satellite killers and also ballistic missiles to take out our aircraft carriers. I don't think China is too worried about the U.S.

For now China is being reactive and not proactive and I think the tide will change eventually.

Does anyone here realize how many of our Submarines are sitting in the South China Sea right now? China cannot Build and maintain a Carrier Fleet IMO, If the USA had to develope a carrier fleet at this time in History, it would be way too expensive. The learning curve is huge and expensive.
I doubt they ever will, the country is over populated, that is a huge burden on thier economy. I look for China to come apart at the seams or seclude itself within 10 years.

i just want to throw out my .02 on this. the only way that our fleets are able to operate around the world is our logistics system. we constantly do replenishments at sea with our carriers and other small boys. when the chinese can figure out how to do this, then they might be a viable threat. but until then, our navy is the BEST because we have the global logistical support.

 

I'm not sure that China is looking to put carriers around the globe like the US does.

It's for taking a huge part of the Pacific Ocean around China. It's laying dibs way past the 12 mile limit as it's own. Coastal batteries will likely work in tandem with any ships trying to hold the South China Sea.

Resources, or the lack of have driven wars before and I'm sure that wars will be fought over them in the future. How soon? Time will tell.

The aircraft carrier is still a huge floating target. US navy might pretend it isn't but they haven't gotten any harder to sink since WW2. Probably easier now. Back then you had to dive bomb them or get close enough to use a torpedo.

We like to sit back and say our stuff can kick anybody's ***. We have the technology, the training etc etc. Yea and the Germans had the best tanks and the best trained men, we overwhelmed them with sheer numbers. China has submarines, not just us. they would be operating close to home, we would not. They have a modern air force, yea they don't have F22 raptors, they just send up 20 planes to our 1, Raptors don't carry that many missiles. They have those new anti ship missiles with what 1000 mile range, yea they aren't as good as ours. So they shoot 20 of them. All it takes is one to get thru, just as they could easily send a couple planes in at wave top and simply crash into our carrier.

Yea they are learning. But they aren't stupid, remember who wrote 'the art of war'.

 

I can't agree with your post more. Most folks here don't realize that technology is a double edged sword...and we haven't fought a real war since WW2....against a very capable enemy. The Chinese or Russians can overwhelm a carrier task group with sea skimming missiles...like you posted. This was Russia's plan throughout the cold war. They just need to launch a couple dozen...one or 2 will damage a carrier severely...and take it out of the fight. Our technological superiority comes at the expense of numbers. We can't produce enough of any military equipment to survive large losses in a major war with a country that can manufacture large numbers of less sophisticated equipment..be it airplanes or whatever. Iraq and Afghanistan are not real wars where the enemy can field sophisticated military weapons....or even large numbers of inferior weapons.

I worked on F-16s for 17 years when active duty in the USAF and one 7.62 round can take one out of the fight...with no field repair if a flight control wire bundle is penetrated. There are no spare major wire harnesses laying around and half the airplane needs to be opened up to replace one. When the F-16 took over the F-4 air to ground roles...air force aircraft battle damage repair (ABDR) training ceased. It takes nearly a year to build one F-16...think about that. Apache helicopters...how long to build one and field it? One major naval ship...how long to replace a sunken aircraft carrier?

What about stealth technology? We lead here however, stealthy aircraft remain somewhat stealthy...until their weapons bays are opened to fire their limited number of missiles. Once the weapons bay opens...they present a large radar signature. This is how the only F117 lost in combat was shot down over Kosovo...by old russian SAMs. F117s were soon after determined to be "obsolete" and retired. Carriers are dinosaurs in my opinion...big...slow targets like the A10.

Well, there are 2 in dry dock getting built at a fervorish pace that we are aware. How many are being developed outside of our knowledge is an unknown.

Granted, I think we will have the upper hand on them for the next decade but as we start to demilitarize, that's when they will gain a logistical edge!

 

I don't believe China has any intention of going to war against the U.S. They see us declining as a major power and they are content to wait and watch us decline. Meantime, they want to dominate Asia and much of the Pacific, possibly Eastern Africa as well.
Remember, Japan never intended to invade or destroy the U.S. They wanted to dominate Southern and Eastern Asia and to do this they wanted the U.S. Navy out of Asia-Pacific waters. You don't have to match America ship-for-ship to be top alpha dog on your own turf.

 

They are one of the worlds largest traders and really needed a way to protect their own shipping lanes. We do it here and for our allies, I can see why they would want to as well.

That carrier was purchased from Russia. China specializes in reverse engineering, so there will be a breathing spell while they upgrade the carrier they bought while they use it as a pattern for future carriers. The J-15 bears a striking resemblence to one of our older Naval fighters. This is not to say they won't be the future main opponent we will face.

 

The one they have was a partially finished one they got from Russia. We did everything possible to keep them from getting it. I guess we wanted to have all the toys on the playground.

But they are not really like ours. No where as big. The Russians never used steam catapults that you would need to get most planes of a deck, nor the arresting cables to stop them. They used VSTOLS and helos. The kievs were sort of a cross of carrier and cruiser, they had the one angled runway and the front had missiles.

British did the same sort of thing the ramp at the front to get the fully loaded harriers off the deck. They still have the ramp on the Chinese one, so probably don't have the catapult system. And the plane they are using isn't VSTOL, a copy of the Russian SU33. But they would have to come up with some sort of tail hook system to stop them when landing. With that single ramp and small deck, they would be limited on how many air craft they could put up, sort of like escort carriers we used to use. But considerably cheaper than the ones we build.

 

The jets are made in China doubt they will last that long.

Have you all forgoten that a Chinese sub surfaced in the middle of a US carrier battle group?

 

That was the USS Kitty hawk that was slated for decommissioning in 2008, replaced by the USS George Washington. The ship and its escort ships were of a legacy class so their tech wasn't up to a USS Reagan or Washington capabilities.

Also, the Admirals of the US navy are aware that not only do the Chinese, but Russia, Britain and other nations with subs maneuver around battle groups in international waters.

Keep in mind, the sub never surfaced in the middle of the battle group. That's a HUGE misnomer. It surfaced 9 miles from the battle group which is still considered a threat in that it's torpedoes are still in range of the carrier.
