Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper believes a depression is possible and says he's never seen such economic uncertainty.

Harper said the outlook for the Canadian economy is increasingly hard to read.

"The truth is, I've never seen such uncertainty in terms of looking forward to the future," Harper told CTV television on Tuesday. "I'm very worried about the Canadian economy."

When asked whether a depression might be possible, Harper answered: "It could be, but I think we've learned enough about depression; we've learned enough from the 1930s to avoid some of the mistakes that caused a recession in 1929 to become a depression in the 1930s."

The credit crisis and a global sell-off of commodities have slowed Canada's resource-rich economy. Alberta's once booming oil sands sector has cooled as every major company has scrapped or delayed some expansion plans.

The manufacturing sector in central Canada is also in trouble. Canada could lose more than 580,000 jobs within five years if Detroit's Big Three automakers go out of business, according to an Ontario government-commissioned report.

The review, prepared for Ontario's Ministry of Economic Development and released Tuesday, warns that the collapse of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC would send lasting shock waves through the economy.

Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant said Tuesday a proposed 3.4 billion Canadian dollar ($2.8 billion) rescue package is needed to avoid a "catastrophic" chain of events.

Harper said Canada will almost certainly be run a deficit in 2009 as the government spends billions to prop up the economy. Opposition parties tried to topple Harper's Conservative government earlier this month after his fiscal update didn't include a stimulus package.

Harper is a tool.

This is exactly why he's not competent to run the country.

May!!!!!!!!!

Edit: For non-Canadians 'May' is the last name of the leader of one of the smaller political parties in Canada. And whilst I said the above in jest, I found she was surprisingly well spoken and personable in the debates leading up to the Federal elections last October.

And who would be, in this time of uncertainty? Dion? Iggy - a guy so "Canadian" he spent half his life in the UK and US? Please don't say Uncle "Big Brother" Jack...
Paul Martin actually. He had the experience to deal with this sort of thing. But noooo.......Canada had to vote for some wacko who hasnt done anything right for this country. *sarcasm* Great job y'all :thumb:

Btw, if you havent noticed, I really dislike Harper and I live in Alberta. I'm so sick of the big egos of the Conservative party, that they're the only ones who have the best interest of Canadians in mind. Horsesh*t (hmmm, I've been saying that a lot today).

His comment to CTV just confirmed my belief about him that he has no real idea about what he's doing. THAT is far scarier than an uncertain economy to me.

:wow

We sure did vote for Harper, the best of the worst, I like my freedom the way it is, and i will support the CPC before a socialist, communist or a traitor

We(the world) are headed for uncertain times and Canada's significance in this mess is so minimal we are just along for ride,

How could any Canadian support liberals during this recession when they are bankrupted themselves, and would do the same to my country

LIEbrals, NDP= the end to the Canadian way of life...supporters are considered traitors of Canada

I don't know how any rational person could support the Fiberals after the s**t they pulled last time they were in power.

"Perhaps there were a few million dollars that might have been stolen in the process. But how many millions of dollars have we saved because we have re-established the stability of Canada by keeping it a united country?" - Jean Chretien about the sponsorship scandal.

The Fiberal leader at the time said it was okay to steal, cause it was "saving the country"?

Anybody else remember this one? "We hate the GST and we will kill it!" - Chretien, May 2, 1994 - after being elected Prime Minister.

"For years governments have been promising more than they can deliver, and delivering more than they can afford." - Paul Martin

Oh really Paul? I didn't know that until just know... Who did all that spending? The Fiberals.

"Screw the Red Book... Don't tell me what's in the Red Book. I wrote the [email protected] thing. And I know that it's a lot of crap." - Paul Martin, about the Fiberal Party's 1993 federal election platform.

How could anybody support the return of a person like that to a position of leadership of our country?

Smaller government... Less regulations (when it comes to our personal lives)... Reduced taxes... Provision of services that individuals can't provide for themselves...

These should be the goals we aim for.

I'd give it to Connie Fogal. Man she's got heart.

You meant incredibly rude and tasteless, interrupting the party leaders and waving her fat finger at Harper, she is a tool, she couldn't even win her own home riding, shows how powerful she is.

IMHO anyone who didnt vote for harper and his conservatives is nieve, or rich.
think about it. Harper was an economist. Dion was a lawyer... who would you rather have run the country during this global crisis?
the conservatives are the only ones who have lowered taxes in canada. anyone who WANTS higher taxes during this economic crisis is stupid. Or how about Dion's prposed National Carbon Tax? I would really like to know what this guy is smokin... In the end, i think he wants to destroy BCs economy. We ALREADY have a provincial Carbon Tax here... sure... bury the west with taxes; to hell with them... <insert foul language here>
From what i recall Layton was in support of this tax. :(

also, for all you gun lovers out there... remember what the liberals did when they were in... does bill c68 ring a bell? 2 BILLION in taxes wasted to support a poor gun registry?
The conservatives are our only friends, all the others are insecure, and they want to take all our guns away. Just look at the mess the UK is in.
*THINK*
how about during the last election campaign when Dion said he was going to ban automatic weapons? Sorry mr Dion, but they were all banned in canada in the 1970s i believe... sure... support a guy who doesn't really know whats going on... sure.(sarcasm)

After the last election, Dion said he would support the PM in the economic crisis, and then he turned against him. I would never vote for a hypocrite like him. Its' no wonder that the liberals only got 2 seats in all of western canada, they got their asses kiked hard! and now they're whining...

Harper is having issues in parliament because he holds a minority government, and because the other parties lost, they are all pissed, so they are all voting against him, no matter the cost. Then they whine, and form a coalition to try and unseat him. pathetic.
According to global news, the coalition was planned by Dion even before the last election... hes a lawyer, and is using the system to his advantage.
i dont think any of the other parties give a crap about the people... they are sacrificing the greater good in a silly power struggle in ottawa; meanwhile the economy suffers...
The people ELECTED Harper, not the others. Anyone who supports a coalition should have their heads examined. If you dont like democracy, then move to elsewhere.

the way i see it? well i dont think Harper is bulletproof, but he is the lesser of the evils in ottawa.
If you want higher taxes and lies, vote for the other guys.
if you wanna keep your guns, vote Harper.
if you want lower taxes vote for Harper.
He needs our support. lets give it to him. We need to move together to get through the chaos.

peace

speaking of Bloc, let them separate, build a giant wall around them, they can have the east coast as well (no offence to the east coasters eh?) All the money is generated in the oil sands anyways, all the Bloc want are more government handouts, which is why they agreed to support the Coalition.

Harper would have his majority if it wasn't for the people of Quebec voting for the Bloc
