For all you survivalists/preppers out there that prefer a LBV/LBE set up and have a butt pack, what do you keep in there?

I myself have it set up to be a mini BOB of sorts. Its an exact clone my EDC bag so that in the event that i get out my fighting load, i will never be without standard gear...hopefully. It also allows me to ''dump" my ruck without worries.

My actual EDC bag (ModGear deployment bag) then becomes affixed to my BOB or for quick access to essentials and handouts. Some ask why carry the extra weight, Its mainly so that I’ll always have new working gear in my BP and so I do not have to worry about resupply of my line3. It’s literally grab and go.

I know some that use is as an extension of their BOB/ruck. Obviously, the Butt pack is less accessible than your ruck but its also affixed better. My question to those that do it that way is; how do you decide what to put in there and what to put in your pack?

This post is just to get people thinking of packing options/ solutions, not a "BOB pic thread."

First reason is time is at a premium, I also have associates that visit this forum frequently and I really don’t want them to know what I have. My preference is for the old 1956 cotton issue style LCE stuff we got in 1968 that was made in nylon then we humped with a small ALICE primarily because that's what I used way back then. The butt pack holds an extra 100 rds boxed, blast match, bug juice, pocket knife, camo head wrap, pacho, small flash light, weapon cleaning gear, 3 cans of sardines, several tea bags, heat tabs & collapsable stove. Reason being, sometimes ya gotta haul ass cause "it just the fan" and you dropped the ALICE for a break and it's 30 feet away and attracting little lead flying objects.

It contains almonds, peanut butter & crackers, 1 serving of gatorade mix, granola bar, leatherman, 8" pull saw, maps and compass, first aid kit, EMT scissors, sunglasses, leather gloves, parachute cord, fire making stuff, AM/FM radio, FRS radio, trash bag, flashlights w/extra batteries, whistle, duct tape, notepad, pen, sharpie, magnifying glass, reading glasses, cash, water purification tablets, Platypus water bottle, small camera, toilet paper, fishline, N95 mask, super glue, whistle, hand sanitizer, sunblock & mosquito repellant. Since it is also my CERT response kit, it also contains a gas/water shutoff tool.

If I need to stay overnight, I grab the backpack too. If I'm not dressed for the climate, I have a bag of clothing that would probably stay with the car.

I am currently using a butt pack as a GHB. It is not practical for me to have a BOB or large pack with me during the day but this pack can come with me anywhere.

I carry a blade, water bottle, water purification tabs, jerky, power bar, 3 fire starting methods, cotton balls, small vaseline, mini first aid kit, emergency blanket, signal mirror, emergency poncho, para cord, mini multi-tool, am/fm radio, maglite (small not mini), mini deep woods off, bandana and a ziploc bag.

It is very small and I should post a pic. Any suggestions from anyone about carrying anything else or redundancy? I use it with the mind set of haveing to travel under 20km. I am not even sure of the model of butt pack I just pickedit up at the surplus store last week. I also use it for small hikes in the woods.

well since its on an LBE it needs to lean to the needs of combat. this is what ive got in mine: food,lighter and flint,poncho,flashlight,and knee pads. i will put on when i wear the LBE and fill it up with as much food as possable.im going to build a small 1st aid kit to go in it :thumb: if it gets to full you can also take out your poncho and strap it to the outside of the buttpack useing its straps.

Way back when and even today.....I always keep a change of socks and small can of footpowder, cleaning kit, polypro top, casualty blanket and maybe a stripped down MRE. Always add more ammo or chow if needed.

The first M1956 butt pack holds about 14 DVD cases stacked. It's square shaped. Has poncho straps on bottom.
Got two of them. Can use as backpack with adapter or 1968 suspenders.

The M1961 butt pack has a bigger bottom and holds more. Has liner that sucks, I cut mine out. Nylon butt pack seems to hold even more. But, canvas shrinks also.

Got a newer nylon camo butt pack with plastic rings, haven't really used it yet. Kinda like a small WWII cargo pack.

I've used the M1961 canvas and the later nylon version. I've found them to be very beneficial in managing a fighting load.

I currently use an enhanced version made by Blackhawk; The BH STRIKE LLRP.

Sorry, but that's not a butt pack..........a butt pack does NOT hang off a duty belt, a butt pack hangs off a ALICE frame.........any vets PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong..........

The ALICE butt pack goes on the duty belt and the LBE suspenders attache to the buttpack,,,,at least that is the way most of were taught to rig it at basic.

The ALICE gerar is as versitle as the MOLLE and you can put the butt pack on the ALICE pack if desired. The load out works better hanging off the duty belt as the weight is more evenly distributed and the ALICE pack rides high just for this purpose.

It can be both. They are mostly worn attached to the back of the load-carrying-equipment suspenders.

If you look at the back of the alice compatible ones, they have mounting points for the pistol belt and two eyelets for the suspenders.

Woah, I will NEVER STFU.............on a Marine Corps duty belt goes: in the front: 2 or 4 .223 mag pouches.........on the side, a .45 and holster.......at the back is 2 canteens and in the very back is a FaK............with or without suspenders........so where does this butt pack go on a duty belt?? The butt pack was designed for your tent half, to go at the bottom of your ALICE pack........I was there.

My buttpack is stand alone and is a triple butt pack since I cannot carry much weight on my back due to injury. I have an EDC the size of a small clutch purse(yeah, I'm a girl) with enough to survive and cash. In my butt pack I put duplicate compass, multitool, water purification tabs, bandana, a change of socks and undies vacuum packed, Gideon's Bible, gloves, firestarters, extra lighter, months worth of meds, expanded FAK,hand warmers or cooling bandana, more paracord, small tool kit, radio, extra flashlight and batteries, emergency blanket, trash bags, duct tape, sharpening stone, extra meds, and the small, heavy items. I save my book bag type backpack for larger, lightweight bulky items such as a hammock, fleece top, backpackers stove and fuel, extra pants, dehydrated food, cheap air mattress, seal booties, and mess kit. Water bottles, small flashlight, knife hang off the butt pack belt. Wool mummy bag will be tied sling style across the front of my body in cold weather, tied to the backpack in warm weather.
Gear from my purse and EDC packet will go in vest pockets. I can trash either piece and still survive, thanks to all the posts that helped me reorganize and see that 2=1, 1=0.

I can't speak for the USMC. We rarely saw a FAK at all unless you were assigned to carry the squad FAK. Generally speaking the butt pack was used on the pistol belt with suspenders when I went through Army Basic at Ft. Knox, KY in the Summer of '79.

The Army applies the KISS principal since they called it a "Butt Pack" you did not have to guess where it went.
