I am trying to decide if it would be better to build my own bug-out trailer from the ground up, or to buy an older teardrop, Hi-Lo, or small travel trailer to convert for bug-out use. I want to keep it light and under about 20' max, with a less than 3000# gross weight. I plan to add a roof rack for gear and canoes. I can build or fabricate anything, but I want to keep it cost effective. (under $2000 total) I also want some ammenities to make long term stays more comfortable. Please discuss and share your ideas. Thx.

I think time is a big issue. Do you have enough time to build one the way you want before the SHTF?

If I had the skills and time I would build it myself but I think considering the way things are going you might be better off buying an older one and modifying it, just to save some time.

Look on Craigslist and newspaper ads, I've seen several good deals in my area. People are trying to get money for rent etc. I've seen local ads for 20'+ pull behind trailers in the $400-600 range. One key advantage is stove,Shower, sink, water tank etc.

I was thinking of a old school Bus and rig it up and if we got hit with a EM pulse the old diesel engine would still run no computer.

Since you are planning on modifying it anyway, look for a 'hunter's special', this usually means cheap and somewhat beat up. Sometimes they are already painted camo!

Buy then add/build, thats what i did and its a very solid set up.

Ive actually almost cycled out all the original stuff, but it gave me what i needed right away and an excellent base to start from.

Oh, and Negative on the Hi-Lo trailer. I had one, only advantage is low profile behind a car. Older ones are very heavy, and the raise/lower mechanism is simply a steel cable wrapped around a shaft and a few pulleys. If it breaks, it's nearly impossible to raise the camper.... and the cables are the only support in the up position. I had one, and got rid of it after one season and bought a mini-motorhome. Just jump in and go.

around my area alot of ppl will put a camper that fits on the back of a pickup truck. they will take that camper and put it on a large trailer now there is alot of extra room on the trailer, so they will build storage boxes under the front and around the camper sides to fill up space and give you storage areas it really works well.

How big do you want your trailer to be? here in N.Y. I bought a boat trailer off the junk yard for $200 6'x16' and extended it to make a rectangle. In my state the reg. only has dimensions and weight ratings on it you can use them fo any function. if you e-mail me with specifics I could give some advice, I am an Ironworker (welder) i tinker and build stuff for my friends all the time.

I spent some time looking on Ebay and craigslist last night. I think it would be more cost effective to buy a used 16-21ft trailer in good condition and then modify it. So, now I am in the market for one in the sub $2500 range.

sayter...your rig looks like what I am looking for. Light, comforatable, inconspicuous.

What have you...and other posters...done to customize you rigs?

Any input is helpful.

haven't really done much other than just picking up accessories, load equilizer hitch and a portable 3500 watt generator to power it. it has a lot of storage and it is very self contained. been thinking about putting solar panels on top for battery recharging and installing a large large rv battery in the rear storage for the current battery is just a little to small for my tastes, but it does last a few days with lite use.

Good ideas. Especially like the solar panels and larger house battery.

I have thought about adding some stow-a-way hidden compartments for various items.

Also, a small air compressor, some power tools, recovery tools....

Already have the generator and most of the tools I would want.

Any other ideas out there?
