Has anyone taken a moment to consider that the country we grew up in has actually passed into the great beyond, and what we have is not, and hasn't been our nation for some time?

That being said, maybe the best BOL would be another country.

If that is a viable option, where would you go?

I will never leave the US. I had to listen to my M in law (and others) talk about leaving if McCain got elected. I say "whatcha waitin for ? GTFO" Really disturbing considering a long list of service men and women on both side of our family going back to the civil war! Go while the choice is yours! i have to say that i am disenchanted with where are country is and where it is heading. i have had multiple offers in the last year to relocate to other countries, but as much as i travel and as many countries as i have visited..i still can not imagine living anywhere else. the grass may look better on the other side of the fence but i guarantee you that they still have dog**** on thier lawns as well.

I work everyday, which affords me the opportunity to own the things I do. All of it, my home, my vehicles, my supplies and anything else on the home front. I have worked since I was 12-years-old for the things in my life and didn't ask for a handout from anyone unlike some of our other upstanding citizens around all of us in the world. With that being said, I be damned if anyone is going to run me off from what I have worked to get my entire life. So in other words, I am not going anywhere.

If the situation was bad enough (some kind of right wing dictatorship or anti-hippie pogrom, maybe...) Canada is only 30 miles away by foot, skis, snowshoes, snow machine or car. Lots of wide open spaces and friendly people.

Ireland is my second choice, although it would involve sailing about 2,000 miles across the North Atlantic, which depending on the time of year could be foolish. Unless you're got a really big boat, which I don't.

My Parents and I had to abandon the country I was born in, I served in the US Army so no one would ever have to flea from this one. I will protect her and what she stands for til the day I die and then I'll haunt the bastards that ruined her.

We have a list of growing problems but if you think things are bad here then you've never traveled to other countries. Visit South America or Africa or Asia or even Europe and see how well they actually have it and then tell me where you'd rather be?

Done my share for this land for the past 50 years, sinse I was 18, and all that I can see as time goes by is everything getting worse and worse........as long as you people don't open your eyes and see why this is going on and who is to bleme then the worse it will get.

I already have my little farm in the middle of nowhere in Argentina.....but......when the times comes, will I be able to get to it?.

My question is based on *IF* the situation here is bad enough, which I don't think it is yet. Things are *VERY* scary though!

My thought would be to by a large sail boat, and live aboard it. This would allow me to easily sail between Florida, and any one of those small island nations in the Caribbean. That way I could have a favorite stateside port, not have too actually leave full time, which would allow me to cast my vote in the hopes things will eventually change, but I will still be able to escape the many problems that are brewing in the US right now. If those problems come to fruitation, and become permanent, then I am already out of the US at the same time.

The other thing, if the SHTF occurs politically, and this country ceases to exist, and a bug out is necessary, then bugging out to rural America won't really help much. You will still be a subject of the government and it's oppression.

If you are in Panama, or Belize or some other place, then you still have more freedom than the US would be able to provide (under those conditions, not now), and the oppression of the US government can't touch you. it's the ultimate drop off the grid plan. No hiding, no constantly looking over yur shoulder, no worries they will be coming to take your rural farm or small acreage, no fearing shootouts when the guv tries. Just a living were your own sustenance is the only concern.

As for the immigration comment. If this country tanks, and an oppressive Sociallst government takes over, the Mexicans will not only stop coming, but they will go back where they came from.

As for me, my business tanked this year. I am still behind on rent, and I have no way to just go to the Bahamas for a vacation, let alone leave the country permanently.

The answer is yes, because a change of that magnitude is so huge you will see it coming. Also, if you have the property there, then make exit plans now so you have a way out even if we get locked down here. For example, make plans to cross into Mexico, and then hop a plane to Argentina from there.

How fluent is your Spanish? How about your Creole? If you're relying on English alone you're very limited to which countries you can go to. Hopefully you have plenty of money, a poor Yankee in a foreign country doesn't do very well. Speaking of money, what do you think will happen to the economies of these other countries when the US collapses? You can see it now, as our economy fails so fails the world, it's all interconnected.

You should have a plan but it shouldn't be running away, it should be how can we fix it? I know that's easy to say and that things look bleak but this country has been through tougher times. You do have to prepare for the hard times and hopefully you can make it til things improve. Being a "survivor" isn't about being a camouflaged commando, it's being able to get through the rough times and helping to rebuild for a better future.

I agree leave this place no way, you guys just have to know things are going to be weird for awhile becuase we havea bunch of idiots voting right now. they will soon enough find out the error of their ways. I mean really 85 million spent to get elected or 800 million who do you think would win? we just need to stand firm and start in 2010 replace the knuckleheads in washington and out local level we will be fine . There are a couple of countries that may be acceptable...

Costa Rica (decent guns laws), and Peru (liberal guns laws). These countries will accept foreigners on long-term visas, providing you have money and a means of support or you open a business that employs locals.

Some countries even will give you a passport if you put a certain amount of dough into one of their banks.

But consider this... if SHTF hits the fan badly here, what would it be like in a country where you are shaky with the language or customs and do not know the lay of the land. Even if you have moderate means--the locals perhaps will rip you to pieces because they percieve you as rich. And you are compared to them, because they are dirt-dog poor. These countries are not steeped in western traditions--you will be consumed.

The only country which I only would remotely consider would be New Zealand, but the doors to imigration or visas will slam shut should there be a world-wide economic crisis, or chaos not to mention that the airlines will stop running--unless you are married to a citizen.

My wife is Japanese, and because of a family emergency (relatives in bad health) we may have to move back to Japan. I have lived in Japan before, and I know the language, customs and culture--I can survive. If there would be a world-wide crisis, the Japanese will not riot and loot. They will not come to your door and drag you to camps, etc. They are a tight knit culture. But guns are not allowed at all in Japan--big downside for me.
