Need to know when a hen has started to set.She has stopped laying but one other hen is still laying in the nest. I thought that if she was setting she would keep the other hens away.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.............a broody hen will lay eggs, but then she'll set on the eggs, she won't leave the coop........most hens will lay and then leave the coop........

The hen is setting on six eggs it was my understanding that when a hen is setting she doesn't leave her nest, so if another hen is laying in the nest will this effect when the eggs will hatch

She will continue to accept new egg's into the nest for a while until she can cover them all. But they have a way of rotating the eggs around to control their temp so most of them will hatch at the same time.
Make sure you have another nesting area for the other ladies and try to kinda enclose the sitting girl the best you can. If you have a older hen thats been their done that type she'll amaze you at how good of a job they can do.
Also unless you want more chicks make sure you pick up the egg's even more often than normal. The rest of the ladies will see those chicks and get jelous and want to sit. You can also just put a large X on the amount of egg's you want her to hatch and then pick out the fresh. Do it with a marker, the pencil rubs off after a bit....
