Yeah I've had them, they come in cardboard boxes that supply 24-hours worth of food. They have lots of tea, chocolate, and soups. The crackers with pate were the best out of all of it.

Definitely require an outside heat source, we used to carry a Jet Boil to heat up our foods.

Good, but I'm pretty sure the US MREs contain more calories per meal. (not sure though)

I've never been able to find a source for the British ones. Only the American and Canadian ones so far. If the British are doing like the Canadians and putting in a lot of foods that need preparation such as dry soups and powdered potatoes, I'd write the MRE off completely. While I enjoyed the flavors, there was simply too much prep work and hot water required to create a meal. Which means that in the field, those foods will just get tossed away rather than eaten.
