Before you laugh, carp are completely edible when prepared properly. Just de bone, mince the meat, combine it with corn flour and a binder like an egg and make hush puppies. That said, in a SHTF situation with a low food supply, I will be more concerned with calories and nutrition than taste.

I read an article archived online by the local newspaper about a father/son team that fish off the docks at a local lake. They claim that spearing a piece of an old roll or hoagie bun on a hook and then dousing it with imitation vanilla flavoring creates an irresistible bait for carp.

Has anyone else heard of this sort of bait? Do you think it would work with a plastic gummy worm? I would try it out but the water is too cold this time of year for the fish to hang out at the docks.

We used a can of kernel corn with a packet of grape kool aid mixed in. It worked very well.

As a child I fished for carp all the time. It was the easiest way to practice your fish fighting technique with a big fish.


I used whatever cheap bread that we had on hand to make carp bait. The added vanilla extract did make a better bread dough bait. You would take a couple slices of bread, peel the crusts off, add a few drops of vanilla extract to the bread and a few drops of water. Then crush the bread into a ball. If you've done it right your new dough-ball is still a little dry and you add a little more water and continue squishing the dough-ball until you get and evenly damp dough- ball that is still fairly rigid.



You can pull chunks off of the dough-ball and form the piece of dough around your hook, hiding the entire hook. You don't want the ball around your hook to be larger than the mouth of the carp that you're fishing for. If the dough is too wet, it will fly off the hook on the cast or fall off after it's been in the water for a while.


It's best to make your dough several hours before using it so that the moisture and vanilla scent can equalize throughout the dough.

Yep, corn kernels on the hook and a bit of bread berley. Carp are so easy to catch, I can't imagine putting any more effort or money into the bait.

Just bread usually gets them to the surface around here.

I really hope I never need to eat them though. Yuck.

Carp are not picky eaters. I think they would eat a small turd on a hook. Especially if it had a little corn.

I'm itching to try this out (the bread bait, not the turd) but the local lake where the carp reside is owned by the city and requires an annual permit. The city-owned bait shop isn't considered essential so I can't get an permit and I don't want a ticket or arrest.

Bread & vanilla extract or a flour/corn meal mix with vanilla extract work great for carp and catfish.

I always had the best luck with night crawlers. Free for the taking. Just go out on the lawn at night with a flashlight. Especially after a rain. Need to be very fast.
I also used a worm shocker a few times as a kid that a neighbor had made. Pretty dangerous device. Hot electrode that was jammed in the ground to drive the worms topside. Would also shock your hand as you grabbed the worm. Another fun toy for kids in the 60's .

Bread smooshed up doughballs works well also.

strawberry soda and corn flakes was the number one dough bait at the lake. Popular and people caught fish.It was easier just to net them in the drain ditch when the rice fields were drained the ditches drained. Most just died and stank from the lack of water

That’s why you’ve got to be so careful eating the damn things, they eat *anything* and can have all kinds of nasties inside, from toxins and diseases to parasites
