problem:
you are hunting deer or hogs or something and have a rifle bigger than a .22, or a shotgun bigger than a .410

not finding anything,,gettin hungry

then you see a squirrel

that load you have will make hash of it....not good
If Dad had wanted to eat more hash , he would have stayed in the Marines

My Dads solution: you bark the squirrel
meaning you shoot the tree next to him,,

he falls stunned to the ground,, and you dispatch him there if he is not already dead.

Dad was a top notch archer and also did this with a Heavy bow with blunt head arrows

Ideally it went like this..: Dad taught me was the shooter would position himself on the opposite side of the trunk,,, and remain still and quiet,, , then I , or at one time Dad had a dog trained to do it,,
would approach the tree on the squirrel side,, if he was on the trunk or the grounds,, squirrel would scoot around the tree to Dads side

then as he flattened himself against the trunk,, legs spread to grip,, Dad would shoot the tree right between his spread rear legs,

(the Squirrels , not Dads)

Prolly this has been posted B4,, I dunno, ain't got time to check, gotta get the cosmo off this rifle I am giving my Daughters significant other for Christmas tonite

I don't know about this. I've shot tree rats through and through with a .22 and seen them jump from tree to tree with only three working legs. Seen them take multiple pellet hits to the body and keep going. Seen them get shot out of a tree and fall 40 feet, bounce 3 feet off the ground, then take off running up the tree again.

And you're telling me a little bit of bark is going to "stun" them?

I just ugly them out of the trees. I kinda hate to do it though, it mangles the meat so bad.

After they are on the ground, be sure to hit them in the head as hard as can.

You don't want it to come back to life after you picked it up.

read the OP, it leaves the squirrel intact.. maybe you want to mount it,, whatever,, just as difficult to hit between the rear thighs without mangling the squirrel as it is to hit the head,,

and If my Dad could put a blunt from his Bear recurve in that little area ,, I am quite sure he could pop a squirrels head with a .22

or snipers in trees or rocks on Iwo, Pelliliu or Guadalcanal, else I would not be here writing this, I would still be a little cherub in heaven welcoming him there

and as to the .22 going thru the squirrel... and him running off , or putting th whole woods on alert,, that is exactly what you try to avoid,,

Laugh if you will,, or try it, ...

let's see how it works out for ya .....

and report the misses,, not just the hits,, you are on your honor !!!

I've taken squirrels and rabbits, with sling shots , it's to that hard, some with pellet and some with BBs.

Get off your high horse. I been barking squirrels since I was five. After 35 years of filling freezers with tree rats, I know how it is done. It is merely a tool in an arsenal of defense against those awful beasts.

i understand the dilemma for the rifle but with regards to the shotgun why does the gauge matter?

well, you might have slugs only in the 12 ga.. if you were deer hunting,,

or not want to pick 100 pellets out of a squirrel
