My brother has a MAK 90 and he wants to put a nice scope on it but is worried about the constant abuse it would take with the stock scope mount. He also thinks there just has to be a better set up then the stock mount.

Is there an aftermarket scope mount for the MAK 90? He thought he might have to use a shotgun style mount.

I told him I would post something on here and see what you guys had to say.

I don't own one and I hope I am explaining this correctly he was trying to explain it to me so I hope you can understand cuz I'm not sure I do..

Thanks in advance for your help!

If the gun has the side rail, that's the preferred mounting position. Those receiver cover and gas tube cover mounts are unstable.

There are some other good, but more pricey options being made also. There is the Ultimak which is very stable. There are a few other high end mounting systems being made. All are a bit pricey, but they're stable mounts.

Personally, I just use the side rails, so I have little experience with the other options.

Do you have experience with the Ultimak? Seems like a bad idea. The only system I've seen that looked reasonable was the Ak Iron Dot from LaRue. Of course, they don't make it any more.

I have also been looking at the Ultimak for my AK. It actually looks quite good for a scout type mounting system. Couple that with an Aimpoint Micro T-1 and it should be a nice, low weight, red dot option that allows cowitness with the iron sights. Is he wanting to mount a red dot or an actual scope? Imo a scope beyond maybe 3-4x magnification would be somewhat of a waste on an AK since they don't really have the accuracy for shots beyond 2-300yrds.

Good for them. I don't want to come across as a know it all elitist, therefore, this is my own opinion to the best of my understanding. I'm not going to say it's impossible. I will say that I don't think that it is practical. What I mean by that is, I don't feel that when it's do or die I wan't to have to rely on an AK 47 to hit something over 400yrds away. I'd rather have something with a little more range and accuracy. The AK is a great CQB weapon, but, as ballistics will show, the heavy round drops off quite dramatically after several hundred yards. I don't want a scope so that I can see my target and hope I get lucky. Like putting a scope on a pistol, yeah, you might be able to hit something at 200 yards, but not with enough reliability that the option becomes viable. Again, this is my opinion based on my experience and my own personal skill level. It doesn't really matter if someone else can hit a quarter at 400 yards with an AK if I can't. Fwiw, ymmv.

He's looking at a Red Dot I believe. He really wasn't sure what stable mounts were even available. I don't own one so I couldn't offer much info.

Right now there is a laser mounted to the front sight that has the pressure switch back by the trigger. I'm pretty sure that is what was on it when he bought it but he's not a fan of the coiled cable running up to the front sight.

I know having the iron sights as an option is something he would like to maintain cuz they are dead nuts on this thing.

He mentioned upgrading the other day I told him I had the best place to find out about it. Here of course! He's not online so I told him I would see what I could find out for him.

Thanks to everyone for their input!:thumb:

I do. The Ultimak is stable. It's a good place for a reflex sight. It was the first serious mounting system to come out. There are better units out there now, but I haven't played with any of them. I would probably look into some of them over the Ultimak today. But I give it credit where it's due. I particularly like the Beryl mount but haven't tried it.

@MikeK What are some of those better options for a gastube rail system? I'd be interested to know since I am currently looking at the Ultimak. Ultimak looked superior to the Tapco upper handguard. I am not currently aware of other high value items on the market.

The Dog Leg reminds me of a setup that Krebs offers. I think it's around the same price range. Krebs maybe a little more expensive, but I also believe it is lighter and lets you attach an AR stock, if that's your thing. I am interested in knowing if anyone has experience with a quality scout mount similar to the Ultimak since that seems to be fairly light weight and allows cowitness.

I have already posted this once. Try the Kalinka Optics rail. I have two, 1 standard BP-02 and one low rise BP-02. They both retrun to zero fairly well and are like $52 for either.

Thanks HH54R. I actually have one very similar to that already, but I'm looking for something a little lighter weight with the ability to cowitness with my irons.
You better get an HK or A2 rear sight base to mount behind the optic then..no way you can possibly cowitness with the leaf site.
