What is the best water filter / purification system to have on hand at a reasonable price? I remember reading about a new system that came out this year that was from some European country that would even filter out viruses if I'm not mistaken, and 1 filter would do large volumes of water.

There is a small system called Katydin that uses a clay candle that is capable fo removing nearly all biological critters. Last one I bought was around $120. I keep one overseas but never have had to use it. The only drawback is cleaning the candle when it becomes clogged. The hand pump requires quite a bit of force as the filter slowly cloggs with junk too. Its the best one I know of though.
