What do you think the best caliber weapon to have would be in a SHTF situation?

i say 5.56x45 NATO due to its use by LEO and Military.

I went with 30-06. Its a popular hunting cartridge here in the US, and it comes in bolt and semi auto rifle options. I don't feel getting ammo from military or police sources when the SHTF is a viable option.

I think the best would be a 12- or 20-ga. shotgun.
But of those you listed I went with the .30-06, the most versatile, capable all-around do-everything round there is. The variety of ammo available, both factory loads and handloads, is awesome.

I like all calibers, and am will on my way to have most of the ones listed. I would pick which one based on what was happening. If I was bugging out .22 based on how many rounds I could carry and hunting. I feel if you have to look for ammo, your already down a certian creek. If I could pick a second cal. it would be 9mm.

Since you left out the 8 in Howitzer I suppose the Davy Crockett Tactical Nuke is a no-no as well. In that case, I vote for 9 x 18, .38, 5.56 & .308, but only because those are what I have. The government won't sell me any ICBMs, so I make do with what I can get.

I have several of those listed - and then some, but if limited to ONE I would go w/an '06 (I have a bolt action) and as said earlier the .32acp adapter.
I didn't vote the poll as the .45acp & 9mm is a very close second, for carbine and pistol - and with shotshells for small game/birds if needed.

I own .22LR, 30.06, .270, .223, .45, 9mm, .357, and 12GA but I voted for .223. The ammo is light; takes up less room; readily available; and packs a decent punch.

I voted 9mm only because we have Baretta 92's and the Baretta carbine 92 also.. I would have rather seen 38s or 357 as we like the lever action Marlin in 357 and almost any wheel gun in 357...

Wouldn't this depend on what, environment, purpose.... I mean for defensive purposes - short range / long range, hunting big game / small game. there are a lot of variables but I think I will shoot what ever I have the ammo for and what ever I can get.:D:

I'm sure if you live in a place like AZ, NM, West TX where long range is the avg shot you would pick a different round and gun then say swaps of FL or SC where shots are much shorter.
