Best region in New Zealand for prepping?

For those of us who can work remotely and thus have great freedom in where we could potentially live, which part of NZ do you think would be best for prepping?

Despite living in NZ I actually haven't traveled extensively at all.

The biggest problem with NZ seems to be that property prices are insane no matter how remotely you go. So whereas in some countries you can make massive savings if you can work remotely by choosing a property far into the wilderness, in NZ it doesn't seem to be much difference.

I sometimes fantasize about stewart island because of how great it's remoteness would be in a truly Hollywood-type Apocalypse, however more realistically I'm thinking anywhere in NZ that's:
*Cheaper land prices are big farm/garden land is essential.
*Not too near the big cities where the helpless masses are.
*Perhaps on high elevation to discourage post-SHTF visitors.
*Somewhere I enjoy living
*Snow free! Yet forest-fire free!

I'm currently living in the city, one thing that puts me off with moving away from city is my impression that rural NZ might be "trashy" people, but perhaps it's the opposite? My current research has told me that rural people are nice, but any rural village is a trashy ****hole of teenage binge drinkers and weed smokers. Unfortunately when I look at properties on Trademe it seems they are mostly all in villages, it's rare to see properties away from the villages.

Tell me, do the Maoris cause much trouble down there?
It seems almost all white-ruled countries have a small racial minority which generally contain the biggest criminal and socially dysfunctional class.
Gypsies, *******, Hispanics, American Indians, you name it.
How about Maoris?

Hobbiton.

It would be a good choice because:
1) The people who live there like to grow food
2) But since they are neither particularly wise or brave, if you move there you might be the wisest and bravest person around - and almost certainly the tallest too.

The problem with NZ is the country side is hard to scrounge a living off, the Maori had an amazing crack at it but never really prospered. Temperate crops and introduced mammals made all the difference. So I'm afraid if we're to live inland we rely on crops. Whats in our favour is the coastline, if you're to scrounge, go to the water. The downside of that is it's where everybody else is so it's in our interest to just get along with each other haha.

IMO, choose your place for after the global SHTF / the Aussies EMP NZ, according to the following criteria:

Not in JAFA-land or the Hamilton / Wellington / Christchurch / Dunedin city-and-regional equivalents. Note except for Hamilton all those cities are coastal.
Not in the South Island (there are a few honorable exceptions - leave them places for those already living there).
Not where it gets very cold.
Not where the mosquitos are terrible.
Not inland.
Not Northland (Shane Jones' nephs will take your stuff).
Not Gisborne (Shane Jones' cuzzies will take your stuff).
Not Tauranga (Winston Peters will arrange to have your stuff taken from you, being too old and lazy to do it himself).
Not Morrinsville (that place bred our Toothy Commie Prime Minister. It does not deserve a second chance).
Not Wellington (said again for emphasis) as politicos, thugs, thieves, bureaucrats, scum and Members of Parliament - but I repeat myself - will confiscate your stuff 'for redistribution' (to themselves, their families, nephs and cuzzies).
Not (too) rural, because lack of transpo and lack of security when no ROL.
Not (too) near a prison, because TPTB will empty them out.
Not where there are many State houses, because meth, cannabis, gangs.
Not where a Rich Yank has boasted / advertised he built a bug-out mansion.
Not anywhere Sir Michael Cullen has ever been. His infection could be contagious.

Yes on the coast (fish).
Yes on a river (clean drinking / washing / irrigation water).
Yes near farming country (work on and/or guard the land, for food).
Yes in the 'temperate zone' of NZ.
Yes more than a day's walk from any city bigger than your town.
Yes with a port (howsoever 'minor' - i.e. preferably, not a big-ship port; but a trawler port).
Yes with a not-too-diverse community.
Yes in a town max 20-30,000* (surrounded by land to grow crops; containing enough friends to band with).
*Yes where you know your neighbors.

Come on.. now is not the time to be overly cynical.

South Island is great, way less people and way less Volcanoes than North Island.

I think inland is better, because tsunamis, rising sea levels (even if YOU are high enough, the people who are affected will come knocking on your door unless you are far inland) and in war time it would be easiest for an enemy to seize the coast.

Well - inland high ground is very often close to the coast. I would not park my butt on a river estuary; but uphill of that, why not.

Also, in war time who'd bother with NZ? And even if so, the hordes would start with, say, Auckland or Wellington, not Foxton or Reefton...
