I carry a day pack to work in the city (Philadelphia) every day with my supplies ready just in case. I have a multi-tool on my belt and another in the pack, but I would like to legally carry a knife for protection and what if??? So far, I have seen several articles all mention the SOGWinder. Is this a good knife or is there something better. I want something legal to carry but that can be opened/used with one hand. Thanks!

The first thing you are going to have to do is find out what exactly the knife restrictions are for your city. They vary from state to state county to county and city to city. Most approve a blade 2" and under though. Some go with a 3" blade. check that information and then we can begin to pick an appropriate knife. But just for a start I would recommend something like a neck knife CRKT has the F1 that might fit your bill. Or the minipendelton by Cold Steel.

Here in Miami-Dade county is 3 inches, you may get away with 3 1/2 but that will be pushin. its like everyone have said check your local laws or talk to a cop just ask the questions, they may tell you what you can get away with or what they look for when you have a knife.

you should look into the concealed carry permit laws for your area. I imagine in NJ they may be pretty restrictive, but a lot of times they will at least allow you to carry a larger knife (concealed)

As said before you should check local laws and the laws to any place you might visit. I myself carry a Kershaw Blurr Ken Onion design, not a very high end knife but as a mechanic, sailor and camper i have given it h*ll and its still here. I think it set me back 65 bucks, it is assisted opening also so that makes it very handy. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have carried a Benchmade AFCK for about 12 years. It is legal in Texas. It is also no longer made, but they turn up on auctions, at gun shows, etc. Mine is a liner lock, which I personally prefer over the axis lock. I have one with an axis lock, which I like, but I still prefer to carry my old liner lock. Benchmade makes a new one called a "Dejavoo" or something like that, with the liner lock. I am tempted to buy one just because it is cool and Benchmades are darn near indestructible.

Be sure to check your local laws. We can get away with a lot of stuff out here in the Wild West that you guys can't. You can legally carry up to a 5" blade in most of Texas.

I have only owned one SOG, and I was very impressed with it, as well.

I've carried alot of knives over the years and found less hassles when I carried them on my belt (even folders) as they are not concealed. I like my current S&W, as well as my CRKT M16-10kz for pocket carry. I've had spydercos and bucks, benchmade and case, pretty much every maker out there, I always end up going to something light and simple, easy to open and holds a good edge. I have a S&W borderguard on my belt in a sheath (didn't come with one cdnn.com ) and the smaller light M16 in my pocket (wally world). I dont always carry the Smith but always have a blade with me, except when entering restricted areas.

A leatherman is a knife that you can get away with carrying in most cities. If you want something bigger use one of the links above and find what is the limit in you city and then make your own. All this store bought crap is just that-crap. You can do better. I carry a neck knife I made myself. No one knows it is there until I decide. You can make a good knife yourself just by knowing your body type and what knife you can use. Good luck

The best knife is a gun.
I didn't know knives shoot bullets now.

To the OP, like what the other posters above said, before you get a knife better check your local law regarding knife carry. I would recommend you get an assisted opening knife but I don't know if it's a legal to carry it in you city. I carry the Benchmade Vex, a tough and inexpensive knife, if it's gets confiscated or if it gets lost I can replace it. I also carry the Boker Wharcom or Subclaw when ever I have to go formal or minimal. It's light and thin and very concealable, you may think it's small, but with proper techniques and practice it could be a lethal weapon.

If you can afford one then carry what I do, a SMF Strider lockblade. I swear by the Strider SMF for any use including personal protection. Just a lite flick of the wrist in an emergency and it's locked and ready. Lite weight for it's size and hard core.

I will second the Kershaw Blur. I love mine, but again, you need to check your local laws. I have the partially serrated version, with the tanto blade. It also has a reversible pocket clip. I've had a few different Kershaws and they have all been great, and extremely sharp, right out of the box.

I got mine for $55 at Wal-Mart. Bass Pro wanted $65 for it. It is even made in the USA. I've used mine around the farm, at work, and even at fires and car accidents. It hasn't let me down yet.
