Wildlife officials in Colorado say they have killed a bear believed to have been involved in an attack on a teenage boy Friday morning.

At the end of the trail, they discovered a 200-pound bear that matched the description of the one involved in the early morning attack.

MATCHING THE DESCRIPTION??????????????????????? "ok son, what color was it?"
"it was black sir"
"ok, how big was it?"
"oh i dont know.....bear sized?"
"great, we found it and killed it for you"

I have been false charged (at least I hope it was false) by two different black bears with cubs, and had a big boar come in in a rush to a grunt tube in the fall while bow hunting (mistaken identity, no harm to either of us). Had sows with cubs also run the other way quite a few times. It seems the two hundred pound bears like in the article are the worst, probably because of hunger. Have yet to run across this situation.

It doesn't detail the bear's markings but bears do have distinct features that distinguish them from other bears. There are 3 different ones that frequently visit our property and we can tell each apart enough to describe in detail and recognize them from a photo.

Just last week I saw a photo on facebook someone posted without a location and identified the bear as 'ours'. Then it was confirmed that that photo was indeed taken just over the hill from our house.

That specific bear is likely to be killed this summer. And the guy who's feeding wildlife outside his house up here will likely be charged. His irresponsible (and highly illegal) habit of feeding the wildlife and shooting deer from his back door is teaching bears to come to houses for free food. Which means this several hundred pound bear is coming right into active yards looking for free food. This puts people and animals in danger. And causes the needless killing of a bear who otherwise would have lived a long, healthy bear life in the park without any undo danger to people and livestock.

A person was recently killed in CA by a female grizzly! It was determined the person got between the mother and cub. No prosecution expected for the bear! Thank God somebody in the Forest Service understands the natural process for animals to protect their young!

People need to understand and respect the wildlife around them. When you go into a forested area you KNOW there are wild animals and you are in THEIR homes. Respect it, learn it, and behave appropriately.

Wild animals have a natural aversion to people and populated areas. The danger comes when you go into their territory or invite them into yours... and then can't get them back out.

We moved into THEIR space. It's our job to make peace with them.

I didn't phrase that very well did I? lol

By making peace I mean learning to live with them rather than expect them to never set foot on 'human space'. We , personally, live between 2 state forests. Right over our hill, less than 2 miles from us, is where bears are released that have been trapped in towns or other less rural areas.

We KNOW they are here so instead of keeping them off the property we do our best to not attract them. We raise chickens. We do not feed them inside the coop, the food is stored in the house, and we never leave feed out overnight. Trash is burnt right away and not left in bags on the curb. Dog food is brought in at night and food scraps are either buried in the compost (which is well away from the house) or dropped past the woodline so as not to equate free meals to houses. Bird feeders may be out in the day but are taken in at night and are not the sort that can leave a pile of seed on the ground.

By making peace... I mean don't leave a bucket of honey sitting on your front porch and then call 911 because there's a bear peeking in your window. Or complain about a bear in your car because you left a stack of peanut butter sandwiches in there with the windows rolled down.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

And not one person could get to a bow and shoot?:xeye: Last time I checked self defense was self defense, regardless if it was a person or an animal. EVEN if you were defending someone else.
It was night, he was sleeping in a tent, and they chased him off at close range.... ever try to shoot a bow at arm length? :D:

My question is... knowing they were having an event in a place populated by bears why didn't the host have a gun? :thumb:

Close range or not, If I heard someone being attacked in an "encampment" I was in, I would grab my bow and do my best. I'm not going to stand idly by, while someone is being attacked. They can throw me in jail for that matter, but I'm NOT going to let it happen without doing my best.

JMO, But NO animals life is more important than a humans. Not even the most endangered species on the planet. To save a person I Would kill it if at all possible.

I know what you are saying Ma, but that's just me and what I would do. Even if all I had was my Bowie. OK now everyone can call me stupid or whatever, but it won't change my way of thinking. I'm too old and opinionated at this stage of my life. :xeye::thumb:

(Actually I'm thinking of changing my "Custom user title" to "Opinionated Old Fart"):D:

LOL I'm 'MamaCrankyPants' when the kids are in a mood LOL

I would not stand by either. Definitely a person's life is worth more. It doesn't give a whole lot of details, just that they beat it away from the guy and chased it off. I imagine if it had stuck around much longer it wouldn't have made it very far. But then I'm the optimistic sort :D:

ETA: But then I'd have also had a gun with me. Or a machete if I'm at a state park where guns are not permitted.

Humans for some reason believe everything needs to be domesticated. Bears, Wolves and other dangerous game are exactly that. When we enter their world or coax them into ours, it is a recipe for disaster. Chances are something is going to get hurt or worse yet, killed. Usually the wild animal is the loser in this type encounter. I think it is a shame
