Barking dog

Ok guys, the last thing I was to sound like is a whiny bit** but I've got to get this off my chest and see if anyone else has experienced this problem.

I recently returned home from the Army 6mths ago. Since that time I have not had ONE NIGHT of continuous sleep due to a next door neighbor's dog. I live in the county, but still in a sub division so the house is close by, but we're ruled by the county noise laws which don't say anything about dogs. Now if I were to play my music too loud that'd be different I guess. I've contacted the neighbor himself face to face and he was really nice and polite and was like "Oh yea ok, we'll do something about it and leave him inside". He works during the night and we he leaves, he leaves his dog out side all night for it to bark. I mean I've heard long barking, but this dog will bark from 11pm till the sun comes up, and then off and on throughout the day.
So I thought finally the ordeal would be over and I could finally get some sleep.
Well the next 5 nights the same routine. So I go over in the middle of the night an knock on the door and no one answers, so I leave a politie note reminding him of what I had said, and emphizied I haven't had a good night sleep in 6mths and then ended the note by saying I would contact the Sheriff if I was woken up again. Next night, same thing so I call them and they give me the same load of crap, but again nothing happens.
You guessed it. 5 more nights I am woken up, and finally call the Sheriffs office. I'm told that I have to come down to the office to file a complaint. The next day I go down to the Court House where the Sheriffs office is, and ask how I can report a dog barking. They tell me the person who "deals with that" is not in today and should call the next day so they give me a number to call. I call the number and it's a wrong number. So then I call the Sheriffs office again and they say they'll deal with it today as soon at "the one who deals with those things" gets in. So tonight same routine, dog is actually barking as I type right now. So again I called the Sheriff's office and they tell me there is nothing that they or I can do about it, since we're in the county and the dog is not on our property. They then tell me they were going to send a deputy "the one who deals with it" out here tomorrow to explain to me in person why they can't do anything, but I told the woman that I didn't need someone to explain it to me in person, I just need to know why, and she said there's just nothing they can do about it since I'm in the county.

I've researched getting some of those electronic barking things, but the reviews I've read don't sound so good, at least not good enough to spend a 100 bucks on.

So I was just wondering if anyone else has had experiance with this and what I should do?

I have been victimized by uncaring, inconsiderate people's barking dogs too. I thought I would go crazy and everytime I said something to people they would act like something's wrong with me for complaining.

The only effective method I've found is to kill the dog. Unfortunately you are like me and try to work things out so, now, if the dog disappears you are the prime suspect.

What happened to me once is I got angrier and angrier and then lost it and started screaming at my neighbors. I'm sure they thought I was a lunatic and I frightened them so badly they actually did something. I don't recommend this approach and I'm lucky I'm not shot dead by them.

If it's not too loud, earplugs work but take some getting used to. I now sleep with a loud fan which drowns out most noises but the way I eventually solved it was to move to a place where barking dogs aren't as big a problem.

If you're ever in the same situation I highly recommend not saying a word to the owner in case you decide to off the dog. I have NEVER found a person who owns a barking dog to do anything about it without being forced. I really believe it's not an accident their dogs are barking all the time. I think that's what the owners want it to do.

Now that I think about it, I did get one neighbor to move by taking him to court for public disturbance. No lawyer, just filed a complaint and we all appeared in front of the Judge. Pretty informal. Judge wound up telling the guy to get rid of his dogs and if he wanted to have another one, he had to get my permission. I wouldn't expect the same result though. I had all my other neighbors come in and testify that the dogs were a problem.

Anyway, there is someone else who understands how things like this can make a person's life miserable and I wouldn't count on your neighbor doing the right thing.

If he works at night then he sleeps during the day; that leaves all kinds of possibilities. Off the top of my head, you could get a dog that barks a lot during the day and have it fenced next to his house; you could get a cheap lawn mower and leave it running all day outside of his house. You could also check your noise ordnance and see it if has a time listed, if it does you could use that to your advantage and play loud music with speakers pointed at his bedroom window.

I work nights and sleep during the day, so take it from me it shouldnt take a lot to mess with his sleep.

If you lived next to a train station or an airport this would not bother you one bit and you would sleep through it.

It's in your brain as a noise to wake up for.

Because it annoys you.

So what annoys you?

It's your neighbour doing something you feel is wrong.

I can take you the rest of the way but can't be bothered. This is the cheapest, easiest and most immediate fix - to change yourself. Deal with your annoyance in-house. Dogs bark when they're alone and it's not your problem.

Well check out if there is no problem with dogs barking is there a time when you have to be quiet. Like after 10pm or something like that. Then record his dog for hours then play it right back at him all durring the day while he is sleeping and there is no problem with you doing it.
I actually had one of my vets debark a neighbors dog once and it sounded so funny after that it would wake me up laughing every time I heard it after it was so pathetic it was funny. But the good part was I hardly ever herd it so that was good.

My closet neighbor has one of their dogs, that tends to bark constantly as well.
Looks like a mutt, but with a lot of boxer in it. Brindle color coat, and about that size as well.
Don't know what was the other that is mixed with it was.

They have their dogs fenced in, there's about 3 of them, and to my notice they don't neglect them.

However, the dog will bark at absolutely anything it sees until it's out of sight, and I guess some things it doesn't. Day, night, doesn't matter.

It'd bark at a squirrel 3/4 miles away if it saw it. Horses in the field, cows, horse riders, people outside, bike riders, stray dogs, cats, ducks, guineas, sheep, goats...
those just things I've noticed myself. Anything that moves is something for it to bark at.

He's a bonafide false-alarm system, if there ever was one.

The neighbors moved in fairly recently, and for those first few months, it would find something to bark at, constantly.

Most particularly annoying, it would start up that junk, every single time it would spot me outside. It got on my nerves.

So eventually I started carrying some BlackCats in my pocket, and every time that turd started his yelping at me, I'd throw out a pack on the ground.

After about 3 or 4 days of that, he took me off the list of things to bark at.

I think it calmed down a lot on the rest after living there for a while, but it will still bark at something on occasion.

PSYOP the owner, let him feel what you've been feeling, keep him up during the day if possible......if that doesn't work, let lots of time go by, a month or so, then deal with the dog directly if not resolved by the Sherrif or the owner...

get some pot, put in food, feed dog....or more extreme measures....

I did use the bb gun trick on a neighbors once, stopped that schitt pronto..

Yes, unfortunately. I just feel so abandoned by the Sheriffs office. They pretty much leave me with no options.

Actually yea it would bother me if I lived next to a train station or an airport, that's why I don't live next to one.
Yes, it is in my brain for me to wake up to it, because after doing god knows how many hours on guard in Iraq, I realized when the dogs started barking like crazy, someone was trying to get closer to our JSS.
So what annoy's me? No it's not the dog, it's not because I "think" the neighbor is wronging me, it's because I can't sleep.
I hate hippies.:xeye:

Yes believe me, I've thought of sitting on the edge of my property with 20 air horns, blowing them all throughout the day. But as it was put to me, I can't make loud noises, but as far as a dog barking "there's nothing we (sheriff's department) can do".

I might try to use that anti dog barking CD, but I can't seem to find any reviews for it.

I was actually only suggesting changing your inner state because it's cheap and quick and easy and means nobody can own you. It's what I do myself.

I had a friend writing a doctoral thesis at home... one thing after another stopped her. In the end the neighbour's dogs barking stopped her. I barely even noticed it but it sent her into a shaking strung-out fit of rage. She'd had words with the neighbours, she was doing everything she could to stop the dogs barking. It would have been easier and cheaper and less emotional stuff if she'd just got on with her stuff and ignored the dogs.

When something annoys you it can spiral out of control to a point where adrenaline is flooding your body, you're wide awake, furious, stressed out and won't be getting any more sleep that night. You had bad dog experiences overseas - now's a chance to retrain. In the US dogs barking does not mean what it does in Iraq. You have a chance to reset.

Honestly: the more you train yourself out of being bothered by things, the more powerful you become. The dog's an opportunity, not an inconvenience.

- if you wish to see it that way. no pressure. :D:

I just hope you don't decide to mix a small amount of broken glass into some raw hamburger & toss it to the dog because....... That wouldn't be very polite.

You should probably just sell your house & move somewhere where the neighbors are more rescpectfull of you.

Well if you like dogs and don't have one yourself, you could always solve the problem by asking the neighbor if you can befriend his dog. His dog is obviously bored, not being taken care of properly and is negleted some. However, you can get a few different types of remote barking devices @ Petsmart or petco and you can find them online even. I use 1 of them that only cost me $10 and it emits a high pitched sound only a dog can hear and it goes 20ft. It distracts the dog from barking or doing bad behavior, it doesn't work for all dogs. It works for my border collie like magic, but certain breeds having a higher tolerance for stuff and doesn't phase them.
