I know a lot of people (especially Texans, it seems like) have 1 gun that they only drag out to show off at backyard parties and barbeques, that usually has a bit of engraving, definitely a nice set of grips, and a fancy tooled holster. My favorite belongs to a freind, it is a series-70 colt 1911 .45, with a little custom Nimschke style engraving on the slide, gorgeous wooly-mammoth ivory grips (he found an entire tusk and part of a skull in a creek on his property), and a beautiful custom tooled russet leather holster. It makes me drool every time I see it. I'm been giving some thought to making a BBQ gun of my own, as I am about to inherit an excellent colt series 70, and I have a freind that is a very good engraver, and another that makes custom pecan and mesquite grips. Right now the closest thing I have to a BBQ gun is a 1883 mfg. Colt Peacemaker .44-40 that was used by my great-great-great-grandfather, a Texas Ranger. Of course, I don't wear or shoot it, but I do like to show it off to freinds.

So, do any of you fellas have a BBQ gun, or one you can't help but show off? Tell us, and post some pics!

To me, a BBQ gun is just another piece of jewelry, like a big diamond ring or heavy gold necklace.

I'm a Texan through and through, but I don't go to "fancy dress parties".

The barbeque's I have are usually at the range, in between shooting.

Those fancy shootin' irons are more for looks than utility.

But that's just me, get one if you want.

P.S. If you engrave on that 44-40, I will personally hunt you down and flog you to death with a Wal-mart sack.

I got a few pretty fancy guns, but I dont like to take those out much. The ones I take out often are the big kickers, like my newest mountain rifle, built from a titanium montana action on a shaw titanium lined barrel and a bell and carlson alaskan wilderness stock, chambered in .338 Remington Ultra Mag, shes a screamer and weighs in at 6 lbs 14 ounces with glass. No muzzle brake, she kicks worse than my .416 rigby I'd have to say. I love watching people deciding they can handle it, and realize they're wrong lol

I have a couple of BBQ type weapons I suppose, but I don't show them off. They aren't gold plated with rhino penis grips, but they have great historical significance. My hope is simply that they stay in the family and aren't sold to pay off an ex-wife or massive gamling debt or something similar.

Don't worry grumpy, my grandkids will be getting it in the same condition I got it in.
Who said it had to sacrifice utility for looks? I already have a parkerized 1911 that is my EDC/ beater gun. I just thought it would be nice to have a nicer, slightly more decorative gun, both for formal occasions and as an heirloom. I wear my granddads gold tie clips and cuff links no wand then, and I would like to give my decedents something timeless to cherish, and what better than an all-steel, red blood, all-american, by-god 1911?

I was just saying, I very rarely go to "fancy-dress" events, so a BBQ gun is not in my future.:(
I have seen some VERY nice ones, but nothing I would own.
My stainless Ruger Vaquero or my stainless Llama 1911 are about the fanciest-looking guns I own.

If you want one, by all means get one. (That's why I have an M1 Garand:D:)

I'm going to the wrong bbq's :

I want to go to one of these, with people packin' :thumb:

...I could show off my new 1911

On a side note - I don't believe in "safe queens" or show guns. I shoot every thing I own. Even if I owned an original Colt single action revolver - I'd still shoot it. (not often, but I would)

Grumpy, by "formal" I meant hosting a small party, or conventions. I go to the Texas Wildlife Association convention and the Texas Deer Association meeting every year (for work) in San Antonio, and many people CC, as it is a very gun-friendly environment. That's about as formal of an occasion I can think of.

Grevlin, I only own 4 guns that would qualify as safe queens, and those are extremely old heirlooms, probably not safe to fire. And yes, it is very fun when a bunch of gun nuts get together to do nothing but drool on each others' toys. I think my bank account would be a little more well-padded if I didn't go to them....

Ever consider getting them looked at my a trusted 'smith to get them in firing order? No "upgrading" just bare minimum to safely fire?

No, but I know my way around guns, and ones chamber is badly pitted, one is chambered in an impossible to find caliber (an argentine Mauser that was rechambered), one has a cracked Damascus barrel( old 16 gauge single shot), and the last one is missing a minor part (the peacemaker- the bolt broke). The 5th one is a Remingtom improved Model 6, I still shoot it pretty often.

I own a few nice guns, but I don't show them off unless it is in a picture with a dead animal. I have a few "sacred cows" that I will never sell, but I don't have anything that I can't use if need be.

The whole idea of a "BBQ gun" is just plain silly to me.

Nothing wrong with the idea. However frankly I don't have enough money to be buying guns as jewelry, and in these parts its not common enough practice to be much use.
