Who know's what this guy stopped with his daring and quick thinking. Years ago at my local cracker barrel two gunmen put all the staff in the kitchen freezer after robbing them and beat them to death. Not only did this guy escape the situation he came back to liberate his friends. He deserves a medal and a good job someplace decent instead of autozone.

Know what we need? Fewer people working, and more BS corporate policies that make no sense. I love how AutoZone Corporate won't make a statement. Of course they don't want to discuss the issue, because they know damn well their "We have a zero tolerance policy against employees bringing weapons into the workplace" doesn't in any way fit this situation. I am absolutely not surprised by this at all.

Unfortunately, our lovely legal system causes just this kind of thinking. The "legal liabilities" of him doing this, even though he was in fact a hero both to the other employee and to the company (foiled the robbery, saved them all the money in the safe/registers) make it so that instead of thanking him and maybe even rewarding him, he gets punished. This is a big part of why people tend to look the other way or just not get involved anymore, which is a real shame. :(

Back in the 1970's, there was a crime statistics report that twisted data to the conclusion that you were 5 times more likely to shoot yourself or a friend when trying to use a gun to stop a violent crime. Ever since then, actuaries, risk management specialists, and other corporate stooges have implemented policies that punish the hero.

It may suck, but most business have policies against carrying a weapon on the job, doing other than complying with a robber and pursuing a thief outside of the building or off the premises. Lots of folks have been fired for those offenses, and yes, in this day and age, it is a liability issue.

He may be a hero, but most companies above the mom and pop size would fire him.

The place i work for has the no weapons policy. Guess what? I don't care what that policy is. I'm not willing to take the risk of being killed in a robbery attempt because i couldn't defend myself. To hell with the store. let them get robbed. My life is worth a lot more than $200. I bring a gun and a knife with me to work daily.

I would hope and expect another business in the community will decide to acknowledge this young mans character and offer him a better job at a workplace where he'll be appreciated. Autozone corporate management should be ashamed of themselves. I'll spend my money at Pepboys and pass the word.

Maybe not. Since he was fired for a policy violation, it would not be unusual for a company to contest the unemployment payment as they do have to pay part of it. If the unemployment is denied, you get to pay for his public assistance.

A few years ago I was a buildings maintenance supervisor for them

autozone Sucks -- if I had a dime for every time I saw a customer get screwed over --- I could retire

They knowingly sell defective parts -- if the customer finds out - keep handing them out till they don't come back :thumb:

P/S -- New job - new hair cut - new bald spot ----- did my ass look fat

That's the truth. I went through 7, yes 7 alternators from them and they always failed after a couple months. That lifetime guarantee on the box isn't worth the ink it took to print it.

Part of this is the governments fault, they drove so many postal employees nuts in the 70's & 80's the employees started killing each other... a lot. Google the term 'going postal'...

Those postal shootings resulted in lawsuits against the post office, but it also caught the attention of insurance companies. All businesses must insure the property they are on, just like you should insure your home, a large buisness, which Autozone is, has massive amounts of insurance, insurance for everything from storm damage to lawsuits from customers that slip in the parking lot and sue. Many of the insurance companies will require a large buisness to have a weapons policy before they will insure the buisness. Many city's won't let a buisness open without insurance and if the insurer requires a weapons policy.... you have to have it to open your buisness.

It sucks the guy lost his job. It sucks because lawyers and government employees screwed up this country so much that policies protecting the buisness are needed.

Money before people and common sense.:thumb:
THIS is exactly why I HATE when people (like my coworker) tell me guns should be illegal.
I really doubt the gun this would be robber used was registered. It sounds over simplified but if they outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns. I'm a decent enough guy but I know damn well I could easily obtain illegal guns and quickly.
It's bad enough we give incentive to crooks by bs policies like this, but some people just want to give them the upper hand.

PS: Autozone does suck. I was unfortunate enough a few years ago to work part time for them for a little extra cash and was "taken off the schedule" as they put it because I took a day off for an unplanned event. The event was a funeral. They won't fire you due to legal reasons so they just let you show up to work to find out you could have stayed home.

In cases of armed robbery, most businesses just figure, let 'em have what's in the till. At most you lose a few hundred to a few thousand bucks. If a gunfight breaks out and customers are injured or killed, it won't matter who did the shooting, the aggrieved customers or their surviving relatives will sue the business, because that's where the money is. Then you're looking at millions, plus years of expensive litigation. Let 'em have what's in the till.

Having been in similar situations (working retail) I can tell you that the company policy on guns and robberies were explained to me in great detail at hiring. I was asked if I had any questions, then I was required to sign a CONTRACT that stated I understood this policy, AGREED to follow it and would be FIRED for violation. If he didn't feel that he could abide by the conditions of that contract, he should never have taken the job. He knowingly and willingly BROKE the contract. IF there was no such contract, it could be a free for all in court.

Sort of. There has to be boundries to that sort of threat though. You can't sign a contract forcing you to be assulted.

There are workplace laws. (Hopefully)

The issue is that a customer is more likley to sue than an employee. So the safe money is on having the employee as disposable. Rather than hurt the customer.

I have the same issue in my job.

the way to get this changed , is to vote with your dollars , if you support the 2 amendment let auto zone know that their gun policy is going to cost them more money then the possible law suit

this stuff will only get changed if people start to effect the bottom line

boils down to risk management

The correct people to boycott would be those who hold the insurance policy on those companies like auto zone. If all the companies stick together on their anti2nd policy, even pro2nd business owners have no choice but to comply or loose their business in law suits.
