Crystal sugar is beet sugar.
I've eaten sugar beets. I used to hire my truck out hauling beets 24 hours a day. I usually had one in the cab to munch on while waiting in line. They're like a really sweet turnip.
I stop and pick them up when I see them by the side of the road when they're hauling.
The chickens especially like them.
