My wife and I just had our first child not that long ago. Now it seems like I have about 30 empty gallon jugs of nursery water in the garage. Can I just fill these back up and put them in the basement, or do I have to clean them out with something and put purification tablets in with them? Also what about 2 liter soda bottles. Will these work also?

I'm not sure what nursery water is, I assume it's some type of plastic jugs. If your goal is to store 30 gallons of water I would just buy those 2 1/2 gallon of pure water.

BUT...I would keep in mind that 30 gallons of water won't last long anyway.

I would really focus on your ability to gather water and purifying it. It just not possible to store enough water to meet your needs. I have well over a years worth of food but I only have water for 30 days.

Do a search on purifying water, there have been numerous threads on this issue.
i.e., you have a basement, do you have a sump pump with water coming in there?

Good luck!

If nursery water is what I think it is, (i.e. distilled water) than the bottles should be good to use for water storage. I used to store water in 1 gal. milk jugs with a tablespoon of bleach added for extra safety. That worked for me for a long time, but yo can only store so much water that way. It is not a long term solution, but better than nothing if you're short of cash. I also used 2 and 3 liter coke bottles as well. Again - not long term stuff, but if you can not afford anything else, you what you have until you can get an H2O purifier and/or large storage capability.

I keep a Bota bottle with extra filters for hundreds of quarts of drinking water from questionable sources. If you have empty distilled water bottles I would think they are reusable. I'm not sure of how much bleach to add, also don't add the wrong type of beach.
