... Didn't want to hijack Packhorse's thread about 2 great books.

The book is :
Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls (of Little House On The Prairie fame).

Farmer Boy (Little House): Laura Ingalls Wilder, Garth Williams: 9780060581824: Amazon.com: Books

This book follows a year in the life of a farmboy in the 1800s.
This boy grew up and became Laura's husband.

I'll tell you what - I doubt anyone apart from Mennonites or Amish
can still do the stuff that a farm family of the 1800s took for granted as everyday life.
If you think about it, this was only 4 or 5 generations ago, and dern near all of those skills are gone.

A fantastic read for a description of true off-grid life.

That is a super book; in fact the whole Little House series has a lot of very useful information. And you're absolutely right about how hard they worked. AND it hasn't been that many generations, in my own family, it's only been three.
