:taped: *Whispers* Did he really just say that? On a SURVIVAL forum? Is he NUTS?!
Before you all get the pitchforks and light the torches, just hear me out.
1. In a total long-term, Mad Max, SHTF situation with no new ammo production in sight ever; who is really going to be willing to give up any "spare" chances at a meal or self/home defense? We have hundreds of threads here that detail peoples plans for sniper cover while trading, security precautions, etc. Do you really think that anyone is going to be willing to part with those precious rounds?
2. There is no market. Everyone who will need ammo will either be killed in the massive die-off, while foraging for weapons/ammo, or by the trigger happy doomsdayers that have a property line that means instant death to anyone who ever crosses it for any reason.
Everyone else will be prepared with this site's commonly recommended bajillion rounds per caliber per gun. Don't believe me? Do a quick look around and see how many members report having round counts in the thousands, even ten-thousands, and then multiply that by 145,347 (the number of members here). Between those that claim OP-SEC or boating accidents I bet we average a few thousand rounds per person minimum.
Also, as stated on SB, we have pounded it in to the threads that NO ONE will ever use that much ammo hunting, or live through that many firefights (the loser would forfeit their kit to the victor in this situation anyway). This gives your grand-children ammo that you have stocked up on. If the world has not reset and started producing more ammo by then, they will need replacement springs and gun cleaner much more than another dozen surplus spam cans.
3. Foraging. When the NWO invades with its massive armies and everyone groups up to form the Wolverines, there will be guns and ammo on the ground by the bodies. There will be hidden rebel caches and NWO warehouses and airdrops that drift off course.
Yes, people are going to get absolutely slaughtered trying to supply that way. But if they are desperate enough to attempt that then I doubt they have many, if any, other preps. The needs for food, water, shelter, medical, etc. will take their toll and be more prominent in the minds of those who have not prepared. And in quantity, foraging for any of those could be just as deadly as trying to disarm a body.
I myself have had tunnel vision on the gun preps, and continue to struggle to get away from placing those higher up on a priority list. Guns and ammo are FUN! They look and sound cool, and it's a romantic fantasy to imagine yourself defending the homestead against the hordes of <insert enemy here>. But please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and remember the "boring" preps first. Starvation, dehydration, and exposure have killed millions more people than a lack of ammo has. We defended ourselves, fed ourselves, and conquered others without firearms for thousands of years. It was just messier and harder.
Besides, if we all stop caching millions of rounds that are likely to outlive all of us, we may just stabilize the ammo market for those new to prepping.
