Before I ruin my new (to me) M1 Garand, I am looking for some confirmation.

I can run 30-06 Springfield through an M1, correct? I was at a gun show over the weekend and found some .30 ball 2 that I snagged, but want to know what I can pick up in stores to feed this beast.

Not an expert (there are many here) but you may want to look into an adjustable gas plug and try to avoid firing rounds heavier than the 147 grain ball, to avoid damaging the op rod.
I don't use commercial ammo, I reload military brass or commercial brass and reduce the loads by 10-15%, seems to work for me.

Ammo Garand requires a photocopy of your license before they will sell you anything. CMP has the surplus stuff and you don't have to be a member. Another place you can try is CDVS. CDVS also carries interesting type ammo in other calibers as well along with AP and API. I have shot American Eagle 30.06 with no problems and without modifying the op rod.

The CMP surplus stuff is starting to get expensive. Last time I checked it was 130.00 per 200rd can. 2-3 years back it was 90. Good luck.

Hornaday makes ammo for the Garand, I have some old match ammo, it is 172 grain. WWII military M2 is 150gr.The old M1 ball was 172gr and was phased out before the war. The reason to not use modern ammo is that the powder that is used is too slow burning and raises the port pressure that is what causes damage to the op rod. Excess bullet weight beats up the back of the receiver it does not damage the op rod.

It is all about the pressure curve of the powder used in the ammo. Original 30/06 military loads used either IMR 4895 or 4064 powder and have a certain pressure curve which does not damage the operating rod of the M1 Garand. Much of the modern sporting 30/06 ammo uses slower powders such as IMR 4350 which produce a pressure curve which will eventually damage the op rod on the Garand. If you replace the standard gas plug with a ported plug, you can use the modern 30/06 ammo. If you are a reloader, use the 4895 or 4064 powder and duplicate the ballistics of the mil loads and you will be fine. If not, stick to the ammo that is listed specifically for M1 Garands.

M-1 Garand ammo

Hi:
Love the Garand.
Hunted boar with one for years.
Reloaded much/most of my own ammo.
Ball ammo for plinking, snd Nosler 160gr ballistic tips for hunting.
(But that was a decade ago. Now CA has decreed that hunting bullets must be solid copper. Haven't tried that yet.)
But just about any 30_06 ammo works fine.
Learn to reload, save 75% on your ammo.

Solid copper = copper fouling.
Copper fouling = barrel constriction
Barrel constriction = barrel damage
Barrel damage = inoperative firearm
Inoperative firearm = disarmed populace.
disarmed populace = sheeple.
sheeple = imperial government.

Not hard to go from a to b here...
