My son and I have been watching both shows, DVRing them actually and then watching them when we have the time and by skipping through the commercials.

What are you thoughts about both shows?

I kind of liked the premise at first, and my son is in love with Paige Wyatt on AG, but both shows are filled with a lot of bravo sierra drama and very little real world gunsmithing. They've both gotten real old to me real quick like.

I'm not sure I've been able to take away anything good from either of the shows.

They are completely different in their focus. SOG is more military hardware focused. AG is more into the SAA and 1911's. Although I can't imagine a person spending 10 grand on a custom made SAA copy when you can buy a real colt or USFA one for less than 1500 bucks.

Both shows are pretty lame all in all, but I enjoy American Guns more, atleast you get to see some classic guns rather than just "fake" guns on Sons of Guns.

By "fake", I mean something that 99% of the world will never see or have a use for.

These so called gunsmiths are nothing but gun butchers and crooks.

I would not let any of them touch any of my guns.
I have a background as a machinist and have done some gunsmith.

Here is what a group of real machinist/gunsmiths think of these shows.
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/gunsmithing/american-guns-234189/

These crooks like to put there store name on guns owners brought in for minor repairs.
This has got them sued more then once as they damaged the value of collector guns. And in one case by putting there store name on a gun tried to take credit for a custom gun built by the owner of the gun's grandfather who was a nationally known and well respected gunsmith who's custom guns are now collectors items

They have also put there store name on custom guns and claimed that they built them when in fact they were used customs guns that had been built by other custom gun makers that the original owners had sold through the shop.

here is from EX customers.

Reality show garbage, the lot of it.

Maybe if they had gunsmithing past a middle school level featured on one of their shows, I'd watch it.

But even then, I'd still probably learn more watching an instructional video by a professional. Or even just a youtube video.

Yeah ... that's what I figured. Glad to know I'm not the only one that sees these shows as garbage.

... and dang, I've just spent too much time surfing those links about Gunsmoke aka American Guns. WOW! Talk about some serious customer issues with that place!

Then I went even farther to listen to the radio show about what of the problems .... holy cow. Check it out:

A show in Denver that caters to customer service issues ... customer vs Rick Wyatt of Gunsmoke

You gotta buy the gun in his gun shop first, pay for it, before being allowed into the CCW class or having your background check done ... and if you fail the process and are not allowed to buy, then he refuses the refund and offers to put it up for consignment at 20% commission?

And I mean there is a ton of bad stuff on Gunsmoke out there - good gosh!

And then this one really takes the cake ...

Rick Wyatt brought-up on charges - guy is a total nutcase!

I like Son of Guns but good do with out the love story drama with it.

As for American Guns I am not a fan. It seems to me it is all about him showing he has money. Almost every show is him carrying around a bag of money and precise metals so he can show off. I stopped watching when he said he was the first one to make a "yellow boy" lever action rifle since the late 1800s. Henry makes one and he had a bunch on his wall so how is he the first. He then charges a guy 19,000 to make one.

Personality wise, I'd buy from Will before Wyatt. Wyatt is a pretty pushy salesman. I take them both with a grain of salt...after all its MEANT to be entertaining, not educational.

Locale wise, AG has it all over SOG.

1) It is made for TV

2) It is made for TV....

We have to remember that we are not the #1 demographic for shows like these. It is more for the non-firearm owner who watches these channels. So they have to do and say things to keep the show interesting for these people and "new".

In the end, take it with a grain of sand and personally... any show putting firearms ownership in a good light is fine by me whether I watch it or not.

I've said it before:

The daughter on American guns has a neck like a giraffe.
Freakish.
I can't enjoy that show because I'm distracted by that sideshow neck of hers.
I'ts like "ho hum, another painted gun ... WHOA!!! WTF!!?!? GIRAFFE! GIRAFFE! GIRAFFE!"
And everyone seems to ignore it as if they have giraffes trouncing through their yard every day.
The producers put her on like there's nothing odd.
This is the literal analogue to the proverbial 800 lb gorilla in the room (or on the set). Except it's a giraffe.
Unreal.

Did I mention that the daughter has a long neck?

#15 ·
That's called an Aquiline neck ... very desirable as a breeder. Goes back to the Egyptians. But I think she (Paige) may not be his actual daughter. He only got a divorce from Rebecca in 2005 so ... I do the math. Unless you are talking about whatshername from Son of a Guns? The one that dies her hair black?

I watch red jacket show for a while, I enjoy it but they are now making it more and more obvious of the "issues". I can't stand the mother and daughter on American guns. Their voices are so obnoxious and I think the father has been playing with the daughter. Both of the daughters (redjacket and AG) need to lose weight.

#23 ·
paige needs to lose weight? lol. she needs to eat a sandwich and she shouldnt have got the boob job. funny that the dad pimps her out for his show and sales. specially from such a conservative guy. and charging someone before a background check and then wants to buy it back from her for way under what she paid? yea thats good practice.

Thank you BuellerBueller for mentioning it, now all I can stare at is her freakishly long neck. It bugs me now. I don't really watch that American Guns. I do enjoy watching Sons of Guns, not b/c I hope to learn anything or see anything worthwhile in terms of gunsmithing or information, I just like to see s**t go boom. I could care less about much else of the show except when they start blowing stuff up and shooting things. Their creations are cool, not that I would ever have the money or the need for most of it. Just fun to watch stuff go bang and boom.

I tried to watch American Guns just for the guns, and ignore all the drama, but it's impossible. I almost couldn't get beyond the intro, even. Fake people doing fake stuff. Like all these reality shows, clearly made for the obnoxious guy that eats 4 or 5 Big Macs per sitting, and has got to have more "big boy toys" than the jerk next door.

So far the comments are in line with my thoughts...

SOG has over priced guns that most of us could not reasonably afford or own legally; however the restoration work is of some interest.

AG at gunsmoke was tolerable last season, now it is a joke to watch. The gun builds the past two weeks are so out of line in cost that it is clearly a rip off to the customer for the amount of money they charge. Example: the punt gun episode, a cheap imitation of a classic design by creating a gun that more or less was a cheap open ended pipe bomb with some paint and an ignition system for a mere $10,000.

The cheap entertainment value has been lost on these two shows

I could not see spending beaucoup dollars on a Colt 1911 or SAA by gunsmoke for $4,000 when an original could be had.

I enjoy sons of guns , never saw the other show .
I agree the drama is getting a little annoying , but I think to the producers the show would get pretty dry since they can't show many of the technical details.
What I've enjoyed has been some of the projects that we've all thought of doing that he's started , who hasnt wandered about internally silencing an AK , making an AR run more reliably or develloping a belt frd shotgun.

If you want a good laugh just go to RedJacket's website and look around. Their prices are a joke. IMO, you would be a damn fool to buy anything from either RedJacket or Gunsmoke. There is a point where you pay for a hell of a lot more than what you get.

Okay I will admit that I watch both shows. I really liked Sons of Guns until they started turning it into a semi-scripted "Lifetime" drama instead of reality tv. The amount of emotional highs and lows is really a turn off. I swear I am waiting for one of the gunsmiths to slap another one then run out of the room crying that he doesn't understand his needs. I want to see guns, designing guns, fixing guns and shooting guns not puffing out of chests and egocentric game playing. I actually prefer American Guns now, but only because their focus is still on the guns and commerce. But I sense the drama is going to get thicker as time goes on as well.

And by the way the daughter is 18. So no one has to turn themselves in to the Sheriff's Office for evil thoughts.
