I just got an email confirming that when my prime renews is July the rate is increasing from $79 to $99.
My rate increases in July 2014. So check your renewal dates!

I shop on amazon a lot so I feel like the discounted prices I get probably even out the membership fee. If I had to order more in order to get free shipping or wait around until I have several things to order together then I'll probably end up spending that much more anyway.
It's just harder to part with it all at once.

I will probably still come out ahead but not sure. Its probably still worth it but it ****es me off.

With Prime I get about $60 a year in Kindle book loans, books I don't have to buy. I get a ridiculous number of movies available for streaming, the family uses those, I don't know how many they use. In addition, the minimum order size for free shipping is waived, shipping is two day and, for me anyway, it really is two day. I had an order come from three warehouses last week. One pkg. came in the mail, one was brought all the way out to me by UPS and the last came Fed. Ex. but they were all delivered on the day specified when I ordered.

Do I wish it wasn't going up? Sure. But I get about 15 - 20 packages from them a month, I couldn't figure out how they were doing it at $79 plus the book loan and movie streaming. I'm afraid I'll just be forking over another $1.67 a month (averaged) and still be amazed when three trucks will drive all the way to my house to deliver dog treats, batteries, and sun screen. :xeye:

I read an article on prime shortly ago. Apparently it is one of their biggest money losses. That said the increase doesn't cover their losses and it has been recommended they keep at the former price or risk losing dedicated customers. Even with the hit on prime their profit margin is supposedly quite good. The simple fact is that prime members order from amazon more than box stores and that loss is made up in sales.

What is predicted is that people will cancel their prime with the hike and just wait to but enough things to cover the free shipping minimum that Amazon offers to the masses. Admittedly keeping it is still cost effective for the end buyer.

I read an article that says Amazon is getting sued for ripping people off on the shipping that suppose to be free!

It's been $79 for years and like everything prices go up. Even so, we've gotten so many large items where the shipping alone would have been over $100 that I certainly can't complain about a measly $20 increase. Anyway $20 is better than the $40 some tech sites were reporting.

I got it for free for a month. I never could figure out the value in paying for a service that allows you to pay again for streaming movies. As soon as I saw everything cost more money on top of the yearly fee, I canceled that crap before they charged me.
The aledged free shipping is not free when you compare the cost of same items and pay for shipping seperately. and if you buy $35 of stuff, shipping is free anyway. I put stuff in my wish list, and if I buy something that doesn't add up to $35, I just find something in my wish list and add it to cart. Walla! Free shipping!!!!!
Nope, I just don't see it. Hey give me $80 and I'll let you buy stuff from me for a year. LOL

Netflix lets me stream anything they have available, including movies for no additional charge over the $7 monthly fee.

I'm not into movies but I do order a lot from Amazon. I have seriously considered buying prime but think I'll just wait and get enough items together to get the free shipping. I still think they can make a bundle by keeping the fee at $79.

I'm with ATST. I looked into Prime but couldn't find the benefit. It doesn't lower the prices of the merchandise. I always order enough stuff that I get free shipping anyway. So in the end, it costs the same whether I subscribe to Prime or not. The only thing I would get is 2 day shipping and I don't need that. Am I overlooking something?

Those of us who live far away from the nearest stores, and don't go to town often.

2 day shipping is what makes it very attractive if you need something.

Example: I'm about to order a drinking safe water hose for my Airstream.
don't have one avalable locally, won't have to drive elsewhere to find it (saving gas) and I can wait the 2 days.

Don't need to order other things unnecessarily.

I pick up my mail when I go to town, 2 day shipping (which I'm too cheap to pay for directly) it insures it's there on my weekly trips.
If I had mail delivered to my place... It would be even more attractive.

I've ordered a number of items off of Amazon but I only do multi-item buys in order to take advantage of items that have free shipping for orders above $35. It is a matter of planning ahead and picking items where I look at value taking into account the total item (unit cost plus shipping) cost. I've paid for shipping in a few rare instances but amounts not worth a prime membership. Doing it this way my orders normally arrive sooner than expected so receive time is really not an issue.
