Ok guys, I found this review of a Kel-Tec SU-16C and it looks like an inexpensive alternative to an AR or AK. It shoots the .223 which I love and it's pretty compact and light which would be great for transport. List price is $550.
Anyone have any experience with it?

Not a bad rifle for the price. Advantages are it uses proven technology so it should be reliable, should be easy to learn to use and relatively low price. Disadvantages are possible lack of parts for repair, and there have been some complaints about the finish on some rifles. Not sure about accuracy.

More than likely if you get it now your gonna be paying close to $600. I know a gun store that sells Saiga's for $549 converted, and they do sell online. So you can get a already converted Saiga for the same price of the Kel-tec. If the Kel-tec were around $300-$400 then I would say go for it. Since it price is up there around the AK pricing I would go ahead and get a AK. PM me if you want to know the name of store, site, etc. If your heart is set on .223 check out Galil, they sell close to $700 but mags aren't cheap.

Umm let us all in on where you can pick up a converted Saiga for $550....I will pick up 2! Do you have a website with that price?

Our local had 4 converted saigas for 550 each and he finally dumped them on gunbroker cause no one would touch them. they were buying romys with scorched front grip airholes for 640.. he sold dozens of wasrs while those saigas collected dust. We have a pretty gun savvy crowd here though. Closer to the city they would have snapped them up at that money. Same for the tapco builds. No one will touch them except noobs at 675-829. They look good on the wall though and you can dust them quick with a shop vac and brush attachment.....or so the owners says.

I don't know as I have never fired one, but I did get to finger one at my dealer. I must say I was not impressed as it sure seemed light and cheaply made. Do you need/want a semi-auto? If your open to others check out the Remington 7615. It's a pump action very similar to the 870, but chambered in .223 and on top of that it accepts standard 5, 20, and 30 round AR mags.

With a red dot on a Kel Tec SU16 I have kept a coke can rolling (offhand) at 100.

Fun little gun, but not durable enough to be considered a MBR IMHO.
(Yea, I know the round means it's not a MBR... but EBR didn;t sound right)

If you are going to spend in the 600 range I'd look at a DPMS in 223. I got mine for about 550 NIB and am very pleased with it.:thumb:

I haven't seen that low of a price on any DPMS or other AR variant in a long time.

You can say what you want to about the AK, but it is hard to beat. I own four and been shootin for close to 30 years. Go with a milled reciever if possible and use the cheapest ammo possible. I always seem to have the best luck with cheap ammo. It can be found again. Maybe not as much and for a little more,. But it is out there. I have shot all of the other take-offs and clones. None do better than an AK.

I read a review somewhere where the guy put lots of rounds thru his and raved about it. I handled one at a show and it seems flimsy, but glass-filled nylon can be more rugged than you think. Hard to beat the SU for an actual rifle in small stowage space. I'd consider getting one as a trunk gun.

Currently have in my arsenal a Browning M1a Carbine (with WW-2 history) and is an excellent shooter..BUT...When the SHTF, I'll take my collection of AK's over the Browning any day due mainly to dirt & crap tolerance and they just keep on keeping on no matter what. When I was in the 'Nam' back in the 60's, the AR made an appearance and was quickly dubbed as a POS due to it's intolerance to dirt and get you killed in one big hurry. Some guys would pickup 'dropped' AK's SKS's & ammo in a fire fight and use them and never worried about getting off their next shot..those rifles just worked, Regardless !! That was my 2nd impression...The first impression was the sound or report they made when being fired in my direction...caused lotsa brown stains in my skivvies. Ya just can't beat an AK for durability.

There is no alternative to an AK or AR at the same price level anyways. I am astonished that the degree of these types of thread who are are always trying to question what works just find. The AK is used all over the world for a reason. The AR is used in our military for a reason. Is there room for improvement and better options with a significantly higher cost, yes. But there is no way a Kel Tec SU-16C should even be in the conversation when comparing to an a good AK or Decent AR.

That user posted this thread 6 years ago. Chances are he bought the keltec fell in love, fell out of love, and now it resides somewhere in his house collecting dust while he shoots AR-15 he finally came to accept as one of the best rifles on the market.
