I am trying to throw together a last minute (end of september/early october) trip on the Allagash. Have done some online research, ordered a guide book and maps. It will be me and my brother, two kayaks, camping gear and one vehicle making the 10 hour drive to the river. We are experienced campers & are comfortable in class II rapids. Class III we get a little nervous and would walk around these sections.

Looking for advice from the hive on where to launch, where to camp, shuttle vs. vehicle transport service, any park or other fees, what to look out for. Planning on spending about 4 days on the river/lakes. Thanks in advance!

No rapids in the Allagash. It's more like a bunch of interconnected lakes, with very little current. I will say that you gotta bring some good bug dope, and some fishing gear. That time of year, you'll probably be catching perch and the like. Try the old worm on a bobber and you'll be alright. If you want to do the whole thing, give yourself about ten leisurely days, seven hard core paddling days. It's paradise that time of year, I bet you don't see a soul ayut.

I'm from that neck of the woods. You're going to freeze your gnads off if you go in October. September is even a gamble, unless you do it early.
