i have been realizing that shooting the AK74 is quite bit cheaper than shooting the AR 15. Coming from someone who is on a budget who can't afford paying a lot of money stock piling for ammo, I have been seeing some of my friends start to switch platforms on their bug out weapon of choice from the AR to the AK 74. I myself I'm torn between the two weapon systems I don't think I can just change over my platform but was thinking of getting the AK 74 for a weekend shooter so that way i don't dip into my 5.56 ammo storage. I was very impressed with the 74 when I went to go shoot with the recoil and also my gf was able to shoot it and feel good about it because the recoil was so minimal. She also fell in love with that platform compared to my already tricked out AR with EO Tech magnifier and holographic. I'm torn between getting the AK 74 Tantal or getting the AK in a 5.56 caliber to keep the same ammo commonality. But I also see that if I did that it would defeat the purpose on the cheap shooting on the weekend. I have also brought into consideration on using the 74 as a bug out rifle because of the availability to stock pile ammunition so cheap, because paying 260 for 2180 rounds is a great deal. I would greatly appreciate some help on making the decision.

Well, how about a 22 AR or a conversion kit to put in the AR for practice. Can't get much cheaper than that. And it has all the same manual of arms and feel as your standard AR.

Not having anything chambered for 5.56 anymore, I haven't been keeping up w/ the prices. Is 5.56 THAT expensive? I would have guessed the 5.45 would have been more expensive. I prefer .30 caliber weapons personally. I'll stick to 7.62x39mm. TP

Op, if you go with a 74 whichi think you should i would recommend getting a certified version from Henderson defence. Century ak tantals have been known to have keyholing issues.

One other option would be to get a replacement 545 upper for the ar for arouns 500, you can reuse the lower.
