You do not want to have to point your gun at everything you want to see. Many "bumps" in the night are just little kids, maybe even YOUR teenagers, spouse, drunken buddy, etc. Without a LOT of training, a possible lethal encounter is highly likely to make you disengage your safety and have your finger inside of the triggerguard!
Self defense can often mean having to use a phone, a light, hold a kid, etc, while holding a gun, and that really sucks if the gun is a longarm, especially for the elderly, the handicapped, petite women, teenager (you know, the ones who NEED a gun in the first place) A 6 ft, 200 lb, agile male can handle most things (better than with a gun, usually) with just a 3 ft long hunk of 3/4" OD tubing, .095" wall thickness, if he's had a bit of training with it. Not true of the lesser able people. Such tubing is lw enough to be easily usable with one hand, guys. yet it's strong and heavy enough to do real damage, too.
Most attacks are not made with a gun, so shooting the guy is likely to cost you $50,000 in legal fees, lost work, having to move, kids/wife being tormented because you are a "killer", etc. There's the criminal trial, then there's the civil suit. Ask OJ Simpson if it's possible to be aquitted and then lose everything to a civil suit!
Even if the attacker does have a gun, you often can't shoot, because of innocent people in the way or behind the guy, or he's moving too fast, or he's some minority kid, 12 years old, about 80 lbs and 4 ft tall. In a lot of areas, such factors will DEFINITELY put you at risk of prison/lawsuit if you actually shoot him, you know. A lot of those kids KNOW this, too.
Often, too, especially without a lot of training, the hesitation of using lethal force takes more to overcome timewise, than you'd need to lunge 3 ft, reach another 5 ft with the pipe, and drop the guy with a blow to the side of his knee. The pain and confusion will probably make him drop the gun, or you can then whack his elbow. MUCH less likely to go to prison or be sued, eh? Court will throw out such cases, if they ever get to court at all.
I'm not saying to not have a gun, I'm saying to have BOTH a handgun AND a non-lethal, simple, silent, effective way of being EITHER lethal or non-lethal. If you have to bust open his head, the pipe can do it. If you have to use it like a pitchfork and run it through his chest you can do that, too, you know.
A silent weapon is helpful if you want to whack one, without making others aware of your presence, you see. Just give a thought to having the tubing as an "option", ok?
Now, it's true that you can use a longarm as a "pugil stick", but you can't do so and still remain ready to fire. You can use that tubing AND have the pistol pointed at the guy, or easily pointed at him in 1/4 second.
A big, long flashlight can be a club, or a "sticking" instrument, too, you know.
I like a AA light for use with the HG, because the weakside thumb is doing nothing anyway (2 handed shooting) So it can hold a AA light pointed alongside the HG, and it can also work a side mounted thumb button. To hell with the ones with a button on their butt ends. Using such a light ruins your 2 handed hold on the pistol!. I can easily prove this, with live fire or with AirSoft, any time you want to see it. The awkward grip necessary with such lights makes you slow with the HG. Same is true of the big, heavy flashlights, unfortunately.
You won't answer the door with a longarm, go to the car with one, mow the grass with one, take out the garbage or get the mail with one, etc. The ccw'd hg is the way to be armed as you do all these things. Then if the house is suddenly(or stealthily) invaded, the gun is just 1/2 sec from being in hand, without your having to take even one step. Much, much better than having to run and get a gun, eh? At night, put the HG and the light under your head-corner mattress, and have the ear protection in the drawer of your nightstand. Don't have them visible, because it tells people that you have a gun. In the drawer, they won't get knocked off and be "unfindable" in the dark.
Don't walk around in your home with the pistol visible, either. People can and do look into other people's windows!. Also, it will soon become like your watch or your wallet, you'll forget that you have it on, and you'll let the UPS guy, mailman, a neighbor, the water meter reader, etc, see it and the word WILL get around that you are nut who wears a gun everywhere. This sort of crap can cause you a lot of trouble in your community, even though it is legal to do. It can invite burglary or armed robbery, for one thing. People think that only someone with 100k worth of gold, diamonds, coins, cash, etc, in the house would do such a thing.
